Apple iPhone 5 Vs Main Rivals: Table Shows Galaxy S II, Bionic & More

As the September or October release rumors continue to abound surrounding the Apple iPhone 5 it seems other speculation mounts by the day. We’ve written numerous posts about the next iPhone over the last few months and on many occasions compared it to other notable handsets. However it can get rather confusing trying to contrast specs for various smartphones so today we thought we’d make it easier for you with a table that shows the iPhone 5 vs. its main rivals.

Obviously the specs used for the iPhone 5 are only rumored for the moment – as always Apple is being notoriously secretive about what we can expect. A while ago we gave an infographic with odds for the various rumors but based on what is known (or what is thought to be known) so far, the chart we have news of today shows contrasting specs and features for the iPhone 5, and 3 of its main rivals, the Samsung Galaxy S II (or S2), the HTC EVO 3D and the Motorola Droid Bionic. Click on the links for more from our previous articles.

This extremely useful table comes to us from Dusan Belic over on IntoMobile and we should tell you that the HTC EVO 3D is already out while the Motorola Droid Bionic is rumored to be appearing in early September on Verizon. The Galaxy S II is now rumored for its US release at some point after an announcement is expected on August 29th at an invitational product event. You can see the table next, courtesy of IntoMobile.

As you can see the iPhone 5 is obviously on the iOS platform while the remaining three are all Android handsets. All four handsets involved in the comparison have dual-core processors of between 1GHz and 1.2GHz and there would be a lot of shocked people if that were not confirmed for the next iPhone. If Apple were to stick to a single-core processor it would seem like a step backwards. Other aspects shown in the table include the number of apps available, connectivity, display, camera specifics and even whether it has 3D (only the EVO 3D).

If the iPhone 5 had not been delayed quite so long we would agree wholeheartedly with the others in this chart being its main rivals. However, the longer the launch delay of the iPhone 5 the more it will have to compete with newer upcoming models with even better specs, such as the HTC Vigor coming to Verizon which will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and which we compared it with yesterday. There’s also Google’s Nexus Prime, also referred to as the Google Nexus 4G, expected to run on the next Android OS, 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich and there’s also the HTC Eternity, pegged for the holiday season and this will be a Windows Phone 7 with Mango update handset. Only yesterday we also gave details of an upcoming smartphone in China, the Meizu MX, which will have a quad-core processor, the first Android handset in the world that will do so and possibly the shape of things to come.

As an extra snippet for those of you still convinced that the iPhone 5 will be your smartphone of choice, it is now being reported that stores are now starting training in readiness for the iPhone 5 launch which hopefully is a good sign. Alastair Stevenson over on International Business Times for instance, reports that Rogers of Canada is now carrying out pre-launch training but of course whether this means a September release rather than October is still speculation at present.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on the iPhone 5 and its main rivals. Are there any other smartphones not mentioned here that you may opt for instead? Maybe the iPhone for you is not just about specs but the whole status surrounding Apple products? Let us know with your comments.
