Vote Bert & Ernie To Wed Via Social Media: LGBT Focus

For many the word “social media” may not mean anything straight away, but then if we associate it with words such as Facebook, Twitter, the use of MySpace and so on, then it starts to sound familiar. Individuals log onto the above sites plus many more, every day of every week and its not just these people reaping the benefits of them, small and large businesses are finding them a good tool for advertising and marketing purposes and so on.

But today the news is somewhat different. We’ll talking about a new social media campaign to get together, believe it or not, Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie. The characters which many of us will remember from the early days, have always been together in what some are now saying a gay relationship.

Although many have played this down including Sesame Street saying, “Bert & Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics, they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation, the new campaign allows people to vote on the couple getting wed.”

In support of LGBT teens, or Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender, the new campaign showing a petition, can be seen over on a dedicated Facebook page and Change.Org. Amazingly, some 8,000 signatures according to mashable have been acquired in nine days, pretty impressive in just a short timespan.

Creator of the petition Lair Scott has responded to it by saying, “We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful, only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry, or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way.”

On the topic of gay marriage, we just wanted to remind you of some previous articles we’ve brought you including the legislation of “Same Sex Marriage” in New York City, in which we followed up with the Empire State Building showing the rainbow gay pride colors as well as Canada’s Niagara Falls being lit up. Along with this, back at the end of last year, we spoke about music artist Lady Gaga and her quest to support DADT.

What are your thoughts on Bert & Ernie getting married? Have you voted? Is it a good way to support LGBT or can you think of something else?
