Samsung Galaxy S II US Roundup: Excitement Mounts for Release

OK, so we know that many people in the US are fed up that they haven’t yet seen the release of the hotly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II (S2). There has been so much speculation and so many release rumors about the Galaxy S II stateside that it’s difficult to sift out the ones with real relevance so today we thought we’d take a look at a US roundup for the Galaxy S II as excitement mounts for its release shortly.

Just in the last few days we’ve given you details of accessories for the S II and told how the Sprint version will now be called the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. Our Maddy Rowe also gave readers a rumored release date of August 12 for the Verizon model, the Function, although as we’re now so close with still no sign this is now looking doubtful. When we look at the countless articles we’ve posted with all the latest news and rumors of the Galaxy S II it’s difficult to know where to start rounding up the news that’s relevant and also most likely for the US.

Fortunately JR Raphael over on Computerworld has taken a look at what is know so far (or thought to be known) and given details. We’ll give you a brief rundown of the information and link to some of our own relevant articles for if you want more details on any particular aspects. Starting with a release time it does still seem as though we’ll see a release in August and the Galaxy S II may come to different carriers at various times in the next few weeks. Shin Jong-kyun, Samsung president of mobile business and digital imaging, told in July how the Galaxy S II would hit the US in August and so far there is no reason to disbelieve this.

Specs by now are very widely known so we’ll keep this brief but you can count on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture, front facer and all running on the latest Android OS, 2.3 Gingerbread. As leaks have dripped through about different US carrier variants of the Galaxy S II we’ve previously noted that some may have slightly different modifications as happened with the original Galaxy S.

On to carriers then. We’ve already told how the Sprint version of the Galaxy S II, previously referred to as the Within, will now be called the Epic 4G Touch (linked to above). From its name we know this will have 4G connectivity, which is something that many US potential buyers were wondering about and it’s likely that this will be a full touch handset. In the last few days we’ve also told readers how the T-Mobile variant of the Galaxy S II is now known to be the Hercules and that this will have a larger 4.5-inch display. For Verizon it’s thought that the Galaxy S II variant will be named the Function and as we referred to earlier in this article, recently a rumored release date was given as August 12. Finally the AT&T Galaxy S II is thought to be titled the Attain and there have been leaked images or what is purported to be this handset although this has never been confirmed.

None of the big 4 carriers has given any official word yet on release dates and more for the Galaxy S II on their networks but of course we shall be following developments and will let you know more as we hear it. If you are a potential buyer for the Galaxy S II you may be interested in our review roundup from when the handset was formerly released in other regions. Of course reviews will also be out for the various carrier models as soon as they are released.

We’d like to know if you’re one of the many still waiting for the arrival of the US Samsung Galaxy S II? Will you stay with your current carrier or maybe switch depending on the variants available? Let us know with your comments.

The big thing pushing me towards this phone rather than the Bionic is 1) the design, of course, thinness is always nice, but 2) Samsung doesn’t feel the need to lock their bootloaders, so if I need to root this phone I could. Motorola’s phones are always locked down tight…

I have been wating all year like everyone else, I now think I have been had. never again will I fall for release hype. The three phones I am interested in (Bonic, S2, iPhone 5) have seen multiple delays. They had better be super or I will return for the next one.

Samsung promised this phone would be released in August. I just want them to stand by that statement. If they delay it any further then I’ll probably buy a cheaper phone (say the Droid X2, which will drop in price soon) and then wait for the Nexus. It makes no sense to spend $300 on this when the Nexus will be coming out shortly after.
