HP TouchPad 4G Pre-Orders Open: Amazon – Price $700

The HP TouchPad tablet device that HP hoped would blow the Apple iPad 2 out of the water has had a pretty mixed reception so far with our review roundup conclusion being that it could do better. However we recently told how a TouchPad 4G version was on its way although we had no news then of a price or release date. The good news for those of you who have been waiting is that the HP TouchPad 4G is now available to pre-order through Amazon and the price will be $700.

The webOS tablet is in fact $699.99 for the 32GB version, that’s around $100 more than the WiFi version, according to Amar Toor over on Engadget, sourced from Amazon. However Toor points out that those who brought the original TouchPad between July 1 and August 4 are already being offered a promotion of App Catalog credit of $50 (see more here) so if you’re going to plump for the 4G option you might do best to wait a little while after the release when prices may drop. We should point out though that as Robert Nelson over on TFTS notes, the TouchPad 4G is not yet true 4G as it is for AT&T and will run on the HSPA+ network. Nelson also notes that there is always the chance that AT&T may offer an on-contract subsidy.

As a recap we can tell you that the HP TouchPad 4G has a 9.7-inch LED backlit multi-touch display, HP web OS 3.0, Beats audio, and a 1.5GHz processor as opposed to the 1.2GHz processor on the WiFi version. There’s no release date listed yet for the TouchPad 4G but we reckon it can’t be too far away now that it’s available to pre-order and we expect to see it launched later this month. If you want to pre-order yours head to the Amazon link above. HP previously announced it would be in time for the ‘back to school’ period so that’s further reason to believe we’ll be seeing the TouchPad 4G release very soon.

Could you be tempted by the $700 price tag for the HP TouchPad 4G, which seems to be pretty reasonable especially when bearing in mind that the 32GB iPad 2 with 3G is a tad more? Will you be pre-ordering from Amazon or maybe waiting to see if the price lowers shortly after release? Let us know with your comments.
