Sony Delay PlayStation Vita Launch: Missing Xmas, 2012 Likely

We have some really bad news for those of you who were planning on getting Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita, it has been delayed for quite a while. So much so that the Japanese manufacturers next gen portable console wont even be out in time for Christmas in the US and Europe. The Vita may make an appearance in Japan before the end of the year, but it looks like the rest of us wont see it until 2012.

The successor to PlayStation Portable was scheduled initially for an October 28th launch in the UK, according to T3. The Vita has now been put back to an unknown date in the early stages of 2012, according to reports. The cause of the delay is still not clear, but Sony maintain that it has nothing to do with Nintendo’s 3DS. Nintendo recently announced they would be slashing the price of the 3DS due to poor sales, but Sony has confirmed they will not be doing this.

Their executive vice-president Kazuo Hirai said: “There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price.” The boss also said that they had made the Vita very affordable, packing so much into the device. The Vita features motion sensitivity and touch screen, with both Wi-Fi and mobile versions being available.

BBC Newsbeat has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will cost $299 (£182) for its mobile phone handset and $249 (£152) in the US for its Wi-Fi-only version. Not only will this news be upsetting for fans, it appears devastating news for Sony themselves who will miss out on huge Christmas sales. The holiday seasons are the periods in which the most gadgets are sold and the absence of the Vita will delight Nintendo.

The delays of technology products are becoming very common, with smartphones such as the iPhone 5 and the US version of the Samsung Galaxy S II driving fans up the wall. You may remember that Sony initially delayed their PS3 all those years back with Nintendo also delaying their 3DS which meant is missed out on a launch last Christmas. It looks like Sony will be breaking their promise of a “phased global roll-out” that was planned for later this year.

So what does this news mean for you, we are guessing many of you may have planned to get the Vita, or even pre-ordered it. The fact that it will not even be here for Christmas may devastate some families who planned to give them as gifts. Will you wait patiently or demand your deposit back? This announcement may even be received worse that when they admitted they had been hacked and the PSN went down for almost a month.
