Some Yahoo Users Suffering Mail Outage [Updated]

In the last few hours, reports have been coming through that Yahoo’s Mail service is down for some users. Many have been suffering from different problems, with the most common appearing to be with logging in and the accessing of emails. The errors look to have only been occurring in the last 24 hours, affecting people in different areas.

The outage appears to be a global one and is producing users with an error message. People attempting to check their emails may see a message like the one below. Todd Wasserman of Mashable has reported that some are being greeted with: “This webpage is not available” and “Error 501 (net::ERR_INSECURE_RESPONSE): Unknown error.” Yahoo has acknowledged the problems and are currently working on them.

I was affected by the outage and my Yahoo Mail account earlier was suffering a strange error caused by the outage. When I entered my username and password, it allowed me to sign in, but as soon as I clicked on the Mail tab it would redirect me back to the log in page and ask me for my password again. Upon re-entering it I would get an error message. The strange thing was I was able to log in and could hover the cursor over the Mail tab to see any unread messages and who they were from. Have you had any similar problems?

As expected all the victims of the outage have taken to social networking sites to voice their feelings. Twitter especially has become very busy with confused people who are having trouble accessing their emails. The most typical tweet on the site to sum them all up is “WTF is wrong with #Yahoo mail?. Luckily the site is now back up for me, but no doubt many of you are unfortunately still suffering from the problem.

Cnet has reported that they have been in contact with Yahoo, and the site has responded with an apology and that they are working as hard as possible to resume service for all their users. “We are working to correct the issue and restore all functionality immediately”. Yahoo has also realized that the outage only applies to users in certain locations and apologized again for the inconvenience.

It is not clear what has caused the outage but whatever the problem is, it has happened in the last 24 hours. Service is being resumed for some so it is just a case of trial and error with signing in to your account. We will keep you updated on this story and when full service is restored, we do however expect it to be resumed for all in the next few hours. Let us know of any problems you are having with Yahoo Mail in the comments section. Is it down for you and has service been resumed yet?

UPDATE: It appears that Yahoo has managed to resolve the problems they were having and resume full service to Mail. They issued a statement earlier saying they were pleased to quickly restore full functionality to the site.
