Twitter Top 10 Trending Topics: This Week’s List

The Twitter top 10 trending topics have been dominated in recent weeks by Football / Soccer because of the endless activities from all the clubs in the transfer window and of course because of the women’s football and Copa America. Now as we get into this week’s list, we are wondering if Football / Soccer can make if four consecutive weeks at the top.

Let’s start things off with the number 10 position in the chart we have Phineas & Ferb; this is the up and coming Disney movie which is coming out on August 5th. More and more people are tweeting about it wanting the release to come sooner… Not long now though fans! In 9th position we have MTV VMAs which is the Video Music Awards where some people were celebrating their favorites getting involves whilst others twitted their disappointment at their favorites not being included with this #VMANominationFailure.

At number 8 in this week’s listings we have Friend’s Day, this started trending because of Brazilian and Argentinean users tweeting and wishing their friends Feliz Dia Do Amigo / Feliz De La Amigo! Flying into 7th spot this week we have Google. The reason that this was trending is because of Google Labs coming to an end and also because of a popular Google Doodle about Gregor Mendel.

The topic hitting 6th position is Paige Conway. As Mashable’s Todd Wasserman says it’s kind of ironic that the week Justin Bieber’s name is absent from the chart, he is instead the cause of a trending topic. She tweeted about the Biebster crashing her cousin’s wedding and fans caught onto it. We are now at the half way point for the chart and the topic featuring in 5th position is Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. This topic began trending as the pair have decided to go their separate ways and get a divorce after 7 years of marriage.

Unsurprisingly in 4th spot this week we have News of the World / Phone Hacking Investigation. This trend has narrowly missed out on the top 10 for the last couple of weeks but now it’s there. The death of journalist Sean Hoare, the phone hacking scandal and incidents involving Rupert Murdoch contributed towards it trending.

We are getting into the top 3 and in 3rd spot we have Twitter! It started trending because of a few different #Tags, these included #DamnTwitter #WhenTwitterWasDown and #OverCapacity. Twitter regularly trends in its own chart when things go wrong. In 2nd position we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 as the final film from the Harry Potter series was released a week ago, there were several contributing #Tags that caused this one to trend.

Finally we are at the number 1 spot in this week’s chart and as previously predicted in other articles its Football / Soccer. With a combination of the Women’s World Cup Final, the Copa America quarter finals, club friendly matches and of course the transfer talk, was there ever really any doubt that it would hit the top of the chart?

Thanks again to Mashable’s Todd Wasserman for providing the chart and remember if you missed last week’s chart then you can find it by clicking here.
