Galaxy S2 US Delay in Release: Is it to Steal iPhone 5 Thunder?

Over the last few months we’ve written many articles about the Samsung Galaxy S2 but it’s significant that over the latter few weeks most of our posts have been about its U.S. release, or lack of. Today we’re wondering if the non-release in the US so far has something to do with Samsung trying to steal the thunder of the Apple iPhone 5.

We’ve written several articles wondering about the US delay in release and asked why Samsung don’t seem in a hurry to release the handset and also told about hardware and carrier importance for this handset. More recently we’ve given a Sprint rumored release date of July 24 and informed our readers of suggestions that the non-appearance of the Galaxy S2 in the US so far could be down to carrier complications. Despite the rumored release dates though, still nothing is official and all we really have is speculation.

Although we’ve mentioned the Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 5 together on many occasions, for example noting they had both missed the deadline for the end of unlimited data plans on Verizon, it’s fair to say that the iPhone 5 hadn’t really come into our equation on why the Galaxy S2 hadn’t been released yet. However an article by Ricardo Bilton over on ZDNet came up with the suggestion that the US Galaxy S2 release might be being delayed to lessen the impact of the Apple iPhone 5 when it eventually launches, by releasing at the same time. This seems like a credible idea, especially when given the recent disagreements between Samsung and Apple.

There is still no concrete date for the iPhone 5 release either but variously we’ve heard of a launch in the middle of August and other stories about an October release so if this idea is accurate would-be owners of the Galaxy S2 may still have some time to wait. An alternative suggestion for the release delay from ZDNet is that Samsung is attempting to arrange a release on all three expected US carriers, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T, so that it launches simultaneously. This of course could be a rather complicated affair and even if one carrier holds back, say for a back to school promotion, it puts a spanner in the works.

If you’re one of the many patiently awaiting the US release of this Android smartphone, while you’re waiting you may want to check out our two most recent posts, one on Galaxy S2 benchmarks that were pretty impressive compared to other devices and the other on a device to follow the Galaxy S2, the Galaxy Q. We’re really interested to hear your views about the US release delay for the Galaxy S2. Do you seriously think this could be a ploy on Samsung’s part to steal some of the limelight from the iPhone 5 on release? Let us know with your comments.

The wait is pissing me off. I am tired of holding back from buying another phone and I think these manufacturers need to stop being immature and release their products.

Samsung’s plan failed, Iphone coming in September. This is all bullshit by August we’ll have 6 moth old device ( launched in UK May 1st ). Also, remember Galaxy S3 was already announced to be released in 2012. So basically in 6-7 months there will be a Galaxy S3. FTS, I’m going to hold out like a 40 year old virgin
