Apple iPad 3 Retina Display More Likely: Coveted High Resolution

There’s a lot of talk at the moment about the Apple iPad 3, the next-generation tablet, and to be frank a lot of it is conflicting. We’re really not sure at the moment whether the next iPad will be the iPad 3, iPad HD or even iPad Plus, all names that have been mentioned over recent weeks. We have news today though about the iPad 3 looking as though it will have a much-coveted Retina Display.

Going back briefly to the question of the name for the next iPad it’s been said that there may be an interim iPad later this year, the iPad HD or iPad Plus followed by an iPad 3 next year but of course different sites are using different terms and many are just using the iPad 3 to mean the next iPad. Of course the various release dates are only speculation at this point. Bearing this in mind we also told the other day about a supposed component spot from the iPad 3 in leaked images, which hinted at a brand new design. In our story about the tablet being dubbed the iPad HD (linked to above) we told how it was rumored to have a 2048 x 1536 double screen resolution and that hints in iOS 5, not yet publicly available, nod to a higher resolution too. This is further backed up by the latest news we have heard of.

Over on 9to5Mac, Seth Weintraub tells of a casual remark made by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, known for his reliable contacts. When complaining about iPad magazines he dropped this into the equation, “These magazines and newspapers that render each “page” as a static 1024 × 768 image are going to look like utter ass on the iPad 3’s 2048 × 1536 retina display.” This is stated very factually as though it is already confirmed news that everybody knows about and is obviously a very positive sign for all of those hoping for an iPad 3 with a Retina Display.

However as before there’s no timescale mentioned and again a possible fall upgrade iPad is noted along with a possible iPad 3 as late as March 2012. Over on Redmond Pie, sourced from The Korea Times another article tells how Apple is apparently conducting quality testing on the new 2048 x 1536 display and that Samsung and LG are involved in this testing. It makes for interesting reading so check it out at the link if you want to find out more. What are your thoughts of a Retina Display looking more likely for the iPad 3?
