Nintendo 3DS Netflix Update: 3DS About To Flourish? [UPDATED]

The world of gaming is constantly changing in lots of different ways. When you look at the way the static consoles are going, they look to be getting more and more interactive with devices like the Kinect for the Xbox 360 and the new Nintendo Wii U. The handheld market is somewhat of a different kettle of fish, there are currently a few devices in it with Nintendo currently having the latest console.

Nintendo’s 3DS hasn’t exactly gotten off to an amazing start since it was released. The first week or so saw sales that you would expect but some people even wanted to return their device because of the 3D effects perhaps being a bit too much for them. Since then we believe the sales haven’t been too good for Nintendo but perhaps they will now something’s happening for it. The Nintendo 3DS Netflix update should be arriving today and we are now wondering, is the Nintendo 3DS about to flourish?

One of the major problems with the Nintendo 3DS in the eyes of OSM is the way that it launched, we don’t feel like the device was fully equipped and it would have benefited from holding off a few months. In our eyes Nintendo pretty much launched an incomplete product that people were getting bored of quickly.

The novelty of 3D imaging and 3D gaming for me quickly wore off but maybe it’s purely because the caliber of titles that it launched with simply weren’t up to scratch. Perhaps if they had launched the console with the new Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake from the N64, Mario Kart 3D and perhaps a Super Mario title then the sales would have rocketed.

Also had they included the web browser and the online store from launch date then they would have had a much better all round product. We love the idea and the concept of the Nintendo 3DS but when you actually play one it feels a bit wrong, it doesn’t feel balanced because of the weight of the top screen with its multiple layers of glass.

Personally even with Netflix, the online store and all of their big name title games that are undoubtedly going to be released on the Nintendo 3DS I still don’t think it can realistically compete with the might of the Sony PS Vita. The PS Vita, NGP, PSP2 whatever you want to know it as is going to cause a stir as they have made it affordable and extremely competitive towards the price point of the Nintendo 3DS.

We first learned about the Netflix inclusion through an article over on Engadget by Richard Lawler, he mentions that there’s about to be new rates on Netflix which is sure to frustrate a few people to say the least. Joystiq reports that this is a part of the weekly eShop, DSi and Wii Shop updates with several other games being made available for purchase across Nintendo’s consoles.

UPDATE: Nintendo has now confirmed this through a press release, you can read it over on their official site or by clicking here.
