Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II) US Competition Roundup

The Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II) is one of the smartphones that is really in the news at the moment. This notable upcoming handset is still awaiting its U.S. release and we recently posted an article asking questions about just why Samsung is taking so long to release the S2 stateside. To keep you going while you wait for the release we thought we’d give you a Samsung Galaxy S2 competition roundup, to help you make up your mind about your next smartphone choice.

We’ve published many articles with comparisons between the Galaxy S2 and other smartphones. Frankly, so far it’s been difficult to find anything that quite measures up, although we’re pretty excited about the upcoming Motorola Droid Bionic and as you might expect, the Apple iPhone 5 too. Before we suggest some alternatives to the Galaxy S2 we’ll give you a brief recap of its specs and features. The S2 has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facer, 1GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB storage options and it all runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

An article over on International Business Times has inspired our article today as it lists ten top contenders for the Galaxy S2 with photos and a run down of each. We’ve used some of these suggestions with some additions of our own and as we go along you can click on our previous articles to find out more on particular aspects.

We cannot imagine a list of Samsung Galaxy S2 competition without talking about the iPhone 5. OSM’S Maddy Rowe wrote earlier today in fact, about the Galaxy S2 and its US release and how this might affect the iPhone 5 and made the valid point that a lot of the competition between these two smartphones will depend on when they are finally on sale to the public. If the Galaxy S2 comes out soon then it will of course have a head start against the iPhone 5, not expected until the fall.

The Google Nexus 4G also dubbed the Google Nexus Prime is another contender. We’ve told how the Nexus 4G is set to be tough competition and also included it in our pick of three handsets that should be out in time for the holiday season along with the iPhone 5 and HTC Eternity. As this is thought to be the first handset that will run on the next Android OS, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, there will be an awful lot of interest in this handset. Another very decent handset is the myTouch 4G Slide on T-Mobile and this is up for release sometime this month and we have previously given you specs and price news.

Next up as rival to the Galaxy S2 is the Motorola Droid Bionic and we recently told how this is due for release in late July or early August. We’ve been highly interested in this 4G LTE handset on Verizon and since it was originally delayed for further ‘enhancements’ can only imagine it should be well worth waiting for. We’ve written countless articles on the Droid Bionic and earlier today published a Bionic roundup of rumors, release news and insight so take a look if you’re interested in finding out more. Another Motorola handset that could challenge is the Photon 4G. This one is due for a summer release on Sprint and we brought you news of a hands-on with video and specs.

The HTC EVO 3D has now been released on Sprint and the Motorola Droid 3 on Verizon has just been made available for direct-fill orders with a retail store release this week. Another handset aiming to compete is another Samsung phone, the Samsung Hercules due for release in August on T-Mobile with a set of pretty decent specs. A couple of phones we’d like to add into the mix are the HTC Eternity mentioned earlier, and the Nokia N9. The HTC Eternity is one to look for as it will be a Windows Phone 7 handset, but with the latest Mango update and due in the fall. This could be the handset that sees the WP7 platform take off and it’s rumored to have a whopping 4.7-inch display and 1.5GHz single-core processor.

Our final inclusion is the Nokia N9, a handset that might particularly interest those who like to take a lot of pictures using their smartphones. A lot is being made of this handset’s camera with Nokia stating that it will be the “fastest image-capturing phone on the market.” It will run on the MeeGo OS and feature an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss wide-angle lens and two LED flash units. So there you have it, a selection of just-released or upcoming smartphones that could possibly give the Galaxy S2 a run for its money. It’s worth remembering that the Galaxy S2 is rumored to be coming to most of the major US carriers on release.

We’d be interested to know if you’re waiting for the Galaxy S2 or have suggestions for alternative handsets to add to our list of S2 competition? Ultimately, will your choice partly be decided by which smartphone is available first? Let us know with your comments.

I am going insane about the galaxy s 2! I have sprint and im in SERIOUS need of a phone! Gosh i dont want to settle for the EVO 3D. They need to hurry up and come out with this now! Also i am hoping that the Galaxy s 2 to look exactly how its been advertised, i dont want to see some lame Keyboard attached to it like the Epic. I want the phone to be thin, crisp, and smooth.
