Samsung Galaxy S2 Faceoff with HTC EVO 3D: With Video

There are some great new and upcoming smartphones about at the moment and two of the handsets we’ve written most about are the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC EVO 3D. The EVO 3D is now out on Sprint but in the U.S. everybody is still waiting for a release of the Galaxy S2 (see release roundup here). We’ve previously taken a look at the Galaxy S2 vs. the EVO 3D but today we have details of a video faceoff, which you can see below our story.

In recent days we’ve continued to wonder about the Galaxy S2’s US absence so far. Yesterday we wrote about some of the possible reasons why Samsung has not got the Galaxy S2 out to the public yet. Following that we told how the Galaxy S2, Droid Bionic and iPhone 5 all missed the deadline for buyers hoping to purchase before Verizon axed their unlimited data plans for new customers. We also noted that some of those playing the Galaxy S2 waiting game might decide to purchase the Motorola Droid 3 instead.

The HTC EVO 3D is another impressive Android handset and of course has its unique selling point, 3D capability. As a recap we’ll remind you of some specs for the HTC EVO 3D and the Galaxy S2. For the Galaxy S2 there’s a 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facer, video capture of 1080p and a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. It runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system with the TouchWiz 4.0 interface. The HTC EVO 3D also runs on 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.0, has a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 1GB of RAM, dual 5-megapixel cameras, 1.3-megapixel front-facer and 720p video capture. It has a 4.3-inch 3D qHD (glasses-free) display.

The video comparison of the Galaxy S2 and EVO 3D comes to us from Brandon Miniman of Pocketnow. We recently also brought you news of another excellent Pocketnow video comparison between the Galaxy S2 and the Droid X2. We’ve written numerous articles now comparing the Galaxy S2 and other handsets and to be frank there haven’t been many that compared to the S2 but the EVO 3D comes pretty close and if you’re after that 3D uniqueness it could be an excellent choice. The 15-minute video looking at dual-core supremacy is very informative and starts with a look at specs and goes on to look at many other aspects including bootup for available RAM, benchmark tests, unofficial speed test, gaming performance, browser comparison and video samples for both handsets.

One of the things to note from the offset is the difference in weight between the Galaxy S2 and EVO 3D with the EVO 3D weighing in notably heavier (54 grams more) because of its 3D capability, so if you want a lightweight phone the Galaxy S2 should probably be your choice. The Galaxy S2 was also the runaway winner in Pocketnow’s unofficial speed tests. The browser comparison was interesting and although both handsets did well, the browser was said to be slightly smoother and definitely more responsive on the Galaxy S2. Ultimately the verdict of the video faceoff was that the Galaxy S2 was still reigning champion at present. Certainly one day another handset will come along to knock it off its perch but HTC at least have the edge on release and will benefit from the non-appearance so far of both the Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 5.

These are both highly impressive handsets as far as we’re concerned and of course personal taste will be a factor. The Galaxy S2 may just have the edge on specs but the HTC EVO 3D also has plenty to offer. We’d like to hear your thoughts on these handsets. If you’ve already purchased the EVO 3D are you happy with it? Are you intending to wait for the US release of the Galaxy S2, no matter how long it takes? Let us know with your comments.
