Jailbreakme.com 3.0 Allows iPad Jailbreak

For those who are not familiar with the term, Jailbreaking means to break open the software allowing you to install programs or features which would otherwise not be available. When using a very closed system like iOS, Jailbreaking is very popular since it allows you to do things that you can’t do with a regular iPhone. For example, the new iOS 5 will allow your device to sync wirelessly with your computer. Those using a Jailbroken iPhone can do that right now!

Apple is very proud of its closed system, allowing consumers a safe environment which is free of viruses and bits of software which could break your phone. This is why they often go out of their way to block the Jailbreaking attempts, the closed system is a selling point for Apple devices because people like living in the Apple universe despite the restrictions.

However, there are people out there who spend their time finding ways to break through a device’s operating system, and those who work under the name Comex have released JailbreakMe 3.0 which finally brings Jailbreaking to the iPad, as well as to the iPod Touch and iPhone platforms. iPhonehacks.com reports that to jailbreak your device, all you have to do is use the Safari browser and visit www.jailbreakme.com.

As you can see it’s a simple app store like webpage which allows you to jailbreak your device just like you would install an application from the regular app store. Clicking Free, and then install file will jailbreak your device, and install the Cydia app store onto your device. This will allow you to then get other applications which allow you to completely customize your device.

Of course, while Jailbreaking is a completely legal in the US, it will void your Apple warranty. It is recommended that you make a backup through iTunes in case you either want to restore your device to its pre-jailbroken state, or in case the Jailbreaking process fails and breaks your device for any reason. Apple will not help you with any problems you find after Jailbreaking your device since you are no longer in their eco-system. Do not jailbreak your device if you feel that you aren’t good enough with computers to fix any problems you may come across.

Personally, the simplicity with which you can jailbreak your device makes it tempting to try this out with my own device. The ability to simply go back to a pre-jailbroken state by restoring from a backup makes it especially tempting, since I could just restore it when iOS5 comes out. The software works on both iPads, the iPhone 3GS and 4 and the iPod Touch 3rd gen and 4th gen models. If you are working with an older version of an Apple device, you may be able to still use jailbreakme 1 or 2 because you are running an older version of iOS, where the security holes may not have been patched.
