Galaxy S2, Droid Bionic and iPhone 5 All Miss Verizon Deadline

Many of you will have been waiting for some new smartphones on Verizon, in particular I’m talking about the Samsung Galaxy S2, the Motorola Droid Bionic and the Apple iPhone 5. Although the iPhone 5 was delayed from a summer release it hasn’t stopped consumers hoping and they also might have expected a Galaxy S2 and Droid Bionic release on Verizon by now. However those three smartphones have all missed the deadline to arrive before Verizon axes its unlimited data plan today.

We’ve posted countless articles on all of these handsets and today have given further news on all three. For the Galaxy S2 we spoke about the possible reasons for the delay in its US release. It’s now two and a half months since the Galaxy S2 was first launched in Korea and yet there’s still no appearance for the US despite mega sales in other regions being recorded and a huge demand for the phone. It’s thought it will be called the Function for Verizon but alas no sign yet.

Another of these phones that we thought would be out by now, when we first heard about it earlier this year, is the Motorola Droid Bionic. This was delayed because of ‘enhancements and recently we gave you some reasons why the rumored new specs meant it would be well worth waiting for. The latest release news on this gives it a rumored release date of late July or early August so at least this one looks as though it’s coming soon. We also gave you a story earlier today with a new image of the upcoming Droid Bionic in which it looks like a pretty stylish device.

The Apple iPhone 5 is another handset that everyone originally expected to see released by now, in line with previous iPhone releases. The release date continues to be the subject of an awful lot of speculation but the most likely release date at the moment seems to be the end of September or early October. However earlier today we told of an analysts report saying that the next iPhone would have a slimmer and lighter design and construction difficulties might even mean a further release delay or a problem with production not keeping up with demand on release. We also told you about rumors that the iPhone 5 may also be carried by Sprint and T-Mobile as well as Verizon and AT&T.

All three of these handsets then have failed to appear in time before Verizon’s unlimited data plans end. Christopher Hudson over on GizmoCrunch tells of panic buying at Verizon stores today from customer’s eager to buy their next smartphone before the unlimited data plan expires, or to upgrade their existing plan to the unlimited plan before it’s too late. This is because existing customers with unlimited data plans will be able to keep their deals for the foreseeable future.

We reckon the Galaxy S2, Droid Bionic and iPhone 5 will all be big hits on release but if any of them had been released before now it would probably have been a runaway success. What are your thoughts on Verizon ending its unlimited data plans and the fact that all three of these most-anticipated smartphones missed the boat? Let us know with your comments.
