iPhone 5 Vs HTC Eternity Vs Nexus Prime: Holiday Season Picks

Here at OSM we like to keep our readers informed with all the latest developments surrounding smartphones. We’ve been pretty excited about many of the impressive smartphones due shortly such as the Motorola Droid Bionic, the U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy S2, the Droid 3 and others but now we want to turn our attention to smartphone releases for the holiday season.

We’re not talking about the summer vacation either, but more the holiday shopping season from Thanksgiving through to Christmas. Recently we’ve published a number of articles about new smartphones that will miss a summer release but are ones to look forward to for the holiday season and we’ll give you an idea of one each for the Android, Windows Phone 7 and iOS platforms.

Starting with Android then a handset that immediately springs to mind is Samsung’s Google Nexus Prime otherwise referred to as the Nexus 4G. We first heard of this as the Nexus 4G and gave a comparison against the iPhone 5 and then later told how it will be the first smartphone released that will run on the next Android OS, 4.0 dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich and that the likely name was the Nexus Prime. Because this will be the first Ice Cream Sandwich Android smartphone there will be a huge amount of interest in this handset.

Some leaked specs and features include a 1.2GHz dual-core processor but this could even be a 1.5GHz dual-core on release, 1GB of RAM, a 4-inch display with resolution of 1280 x 800 with 720p HD and a 5-megapixel camera with advanced sensor and superior low-light performance. It will also be a 4G LTE handset and this one is due around November, just in time for the holiday season.

The next handset we’re featuring is a Windows Phone 7 handset although this will actually run on WP7 with the latest Mango update. The HTC Eternity is expected out in the fall and although the Windows Phone platform hasn’t really sparkled yet, this could be the handset that sees it ignite. This is rumored to have a whopping 4.7-inch WVGA Super LCD screen, a 1.5GHz single-core processor, 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash with 720p video mode and also a 1.3-megapixel front facer. It will also have 16GB of storage, a 1,650mAh battery, DLNA support, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. From what we know of the Mango update so far it looks like pretty impressive stuff so the HTC Eternity should be another handset to be reckoned with.

Finally on to an iOS smartphone and of course that has to be the iPhone 5 (alternatively iPhone 4S). Although we’d still like to be surprised and see this arrive in the summer, all of the attention at the moment focuses on a release in October, with production aiming for shipping in September. As Apple is highly secretive many of us feel like we know what’s coming but of course it’s all unconfirmed. We recently published details of an infographic detailing all the latest iPhone 5 rumors and features with odds for them appearing and the most likely are an A5 dual-core processor, improved camera to 8-megapixels at least and larger screen. We still don’t know if this will be an LTE-equipped handset but that’s certainly something that many people who’ve waited patiently, want to see. Let’s face it, whatever the specs, we know this one is going to be a smash hit.

As an honorary mention we also heard rumors yesterday of a Galaxy S2 Windows Phone 7 edition but this is purely speculation at present. No doubt if it did make an appearance it would be pretty successful and would split buyers with the HTC Eternity. So there you have it, picks for an Android, WP7 and iOS smartphone, which should all be available in time for the lucrative holiday season. Are you heading out to purchase a new smartphone this summer or are you intending to wait for one of these handsets, or another we’ve not mentioned? Let us know with your comments.
