Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II) Windows Phone 7 Mango Edition Rumor

We have probably written more posts about the Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone over the last few weeks than even iPhone 5 posts and it continues to be a popular area of discussion. Although it’s been released in several regions now the fact that it has yet to see a U.S. release has a lot of people talking and only yesterday we told how the absence of the Galaxy S2 and iPhone 5 so far will benefit HTC. Today’s news though concerns a possible Galaxy S2 (S II) Windows Phone 7 Mango edition.

Although this may well seem unlikely, rumors are abounding about the possibility of a WP7 Galaxy S2. If we thought sales of the Galaxy S2 as an Android smartphone were already remarkable, imagine if there was another version instead running Windows Phone 7. Just recently we informed readers about a new handset that had been leaked, the HTC Eternity, which is likely to be the first WP7 handset complete with Mango update, due later this year. This was revealed as an impressive-sounding device with a 1.5GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facer, and a whopping 4.7-inch WVGA Super LCD display and we thought it had the potential of really setting the Windows Phone 7 platform alight.

We told how the HTC Eternity could be a credible rival to the Apple iPhone 5 rumored for release in the fall. We also spoke of how the Galaxy S2 was in danger of missing the boat for release in the U.S especially considering other upcoming handsets with notable specs, one of which was the HTC Eternity. What we didn’t know at this point was that there was a possibility of a Galaxy S2 Windows Phone edition, which could really add to the mix.

An article over on Phone Arena, sourced from WMPU, suggests that a handset showing on the Bluetooth SIG as the Samsung SGH i-937 is a Windows Phone 7 Mango handset. This is deduced from the fact that it has the same Bluetooth profile as the Windows Phone 7 Mango stack and also has been on a list of WP7 devices on Occasional Gamers. Because the model number is only ten above that of the Galaxy S2 (SGH i927), it could in fact be a Galaxy S2 WPU Mango phone.

Desire Athow over on ITProPortal also reports on this latest rumor and notes that although the Galaxy S2 would be equipped to run Windows Phone 7, WP7 Mango devices will work exclusively with Qualcomm processors and so a change from the Samsung Exynos processor to a Qualcomm would be required. It’s certainly food for thought and we’ll be interested to see how this one develops. Did you like the idea of the Galaxy S2 but wanted a Windows Phone 7 handset?
