iPhone 5 Sales Potential Upon Release: Devices That May Impact

If you haven’t heard at least some of the rumors and speculation about the forthcoming Apple iPhone, the iPhone 5, then you must have been leading a very sheltered life. The smartphone that so many are waiting for seems to be the main talking point in the tech world at the moment and today we’re going to take a look at iPhone 5 sales potential upon release and specifically some devices that might impact upon that.

We recently published details of all the latest iPhone 5 rumors in clever infographic form so if you want to catch up then take a look at the link. You’ve probably already heard that September seems to be the date that most people are anticipating its release and there has also been talk of a cheaper iPhone, details of a survey in Europe that told how twice as many will be purchasing the iPhone 5 than an Android and we also recently published a couple of design concepts of the iPhone 5, both of which were pretty tasty.

As far as sales potential goes for the iPhone 5, it seems that the sky’s the limit bearing in mind previous sales for iPhone’s and the fever pitch of anticipation. However there are of course plenty of other devices around that could interfere with sales growth of the iPhone 5 and prevent it fulfilling its true sales potential. Don Reisinger over on eWeek has rounded up 10 products that he feels could impact upon sales of the iPhone 5, not only in the consumer market but also in the enterprise market. It’s not just smartphones either that could harm potential sales for the iPhone 5 but also tablets and Reisinger lists each device along with reasons why he feels they are potentially damaging to iPhone 5 sales.

For starters you might not immediately think of the Apple iPad 2 as being competition for the iPhone 5 but of course it runs on the same software, also has multitouch and because the iPad 2 has been out for several months now it has had a headstart. Also some might wonder if they actually need both devices, given the amount of functionality the iPad 2 offers. Other devices listed are the LG Revolution, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Samsung Droid Charge, HTC EVO 3D and more.

We’ve written many articles about the HTC EVO 3D and have been very impressed with this Android handset. Not only does it have a 4.3-inch 3D qHD display but also a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, runs on the latest Android OS, 2.3 Gingerbread and also of course its main selling point, has 3D capability. We gave you a review roundup of the EVO 3D and the experts received it very well, with the general consensus seeming to be that it was an excellent handset even without the 3D aspect, which was felt by some to be more of a gimmick at the moment. There will be plenty of people though who will enjoy a smartphone with 3D and as it has just gone on sale, like the iPad 2 it has a good headstart against the iPhone 5.

Reisinger also includes upcoming Windows Phone-Based Nokia smartphones and with the WP7 Mango update due in the fall Windows handsets may just be more competition than previous Windows Phone smartphones so far. For more on all the other devices check out the full article at the eWeek link earlier. Another addition we’d like to make to the list is a WP7 Mango handset that caught our attention earlier this week as details leaked out. The HTC Eternity features an 8-megapixel camera, 1.5GHz single-core processor and also a whopping 4.7-inch WVGA Super LCD display. This may well appear at around the same time as the iPhone 5 as it’s due in the fall and looks like it could be a credible Windows Phone alternative.

We would also include the Motorola Droid Bionic to the list of iPhone 5 competition, another Android handset that has been delayed. However when it’s finally released we reckon Motorola will have a very decent device on their hands. After consumers have been kept waiting for this much-anticipated handset Motorola and Verizon need to make it an excellent device.

The next few months will undoubtedly reveal yet more new devices that will hope to dent iPhone 5 sales and we shall, of course, continue to bring you all the latest news on these products. What are your thoughts on other devices that you feel could harm iPhone 5 sales potential? Let us have your comments on this.
