Apple iPad (2): Surpasses 100,000 Apps – Can Anyone Stop Them?

There’s a number of tablet PCs on the market and the ones that seem to be pulling away at the top of the chart is the Apple iPad and the iPad 2. The iconic devices have just had some news as well; the Apple iPad (2) has now surpassed 100,000 apps… Can anyone stop them?

This is majorly down to the developers that have stepped in and starting making the apps, they have been actively encouraged to go ahead with their ideas and make something different. We have seen all sorts creeping into the store such as the ever popular Angry Birds along with Seasons and Rio which are all massive hits.

Of course, not all of the apps on the store are particularly useful. We read through a short article over on Engadget where Vlad Savov is talking about the numbers and how we have already seen with the iPad that quantity and quality are two entirely different things. Apple even went so far as to say they didn’t want any more fart apps being added as there were so many on there already, this certainly gives some perspective.

The number certainly makes some of the other tablet totals look a bit silly as Kelly Hodgkins describes her experience with a Motorola Xoom over on tuaw.com. She explains that she opened her shiny new Xoom tablet; she spent an hour looking for apps with many of them being a heap of junk.

There’s also a great article over on macstories.com by author Federico Viticci who talks about how the Apple store reached 75,000 apps in one year when the original iPad was released in April 2010. When you consider the intense competition that they have had to endure this year and the number of different options that developers had on picking the platform they wanted then it’s still quite an achievement to hit the 100,000 marker.

It’s pretty interesting when you think about it; even if 90% of the apps within the iPad app store were useless then you would still have 10,000 that could help make your life easier. When they pull out their slogan of “There’s an app for that” they really aren’t kidding are they?

What do you think of Apple’s achievement of hitting 100,000 optimized iPad apps? Is there anyone that can halt Apple’s success? Let us know in the comments section below.
