The Pope Takes On Tweeting: His Holiness Gets With the Times

We have reported several examples recently of the Catholic Church using social media, such as the iPhone Confession app and then a Facebook page about the beatification of Pope John Paul II. This weekend we also brought you details of a new website from the Vatican and today we have news of the Pope taking on tweeting as His Holiness has now used Twitter.

The website we informed you about earlier, has now been launched and it’s aim is to increase communication between the Pope and the public with messages from Pope Benedict XVI being posted to social media sites. We also told how it was possible that the Pope may launch the site himself and he did just that, sending a tweet telling of the launch reading, “Dear Friends, I just launched Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.”

Over on Mashable, Brenda Kessler tells us that the Pope actually launched the site using an Apple iPad and sent the tweet from the Twitter for iPad app. The Pope has already seen the introduction of the Vatican YouTube channel and the Pope2You mobile app and the new website launch is yet another step forward for the Catholic Church, a real sign of the institution getting with the times.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on the Pope and the Vatican seemingly embracing modern technology and the use of social media. Do you think it will encourage more young people to take an interest in religion? Let us know with your comments.
