Acer AC700 Chromebook Release : Chrome OS for only $349.99

If you’re a fan of Google’s Chrome OS but don’t want to splash out on a Samsung Series 5 Chromebook then we have news today of a cheaper alternative. The Acer AC700 Chromebook will see a U.S. release this month at a price of only $349.99, which we think sounds pretty reasonable.

There will also be an Acer AC700 3G version released later this summer. Specs and features for the AC700 ultraportable Chromebook include an Atom N570 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of Flash storage, 2 USB 2.0 ports and a 4-in-1 memory card reader. There’s also an HD 1.3-megapixel webcam supporting Adobe Flash 10.1 video and an 11.6-inch HD display. We heard of the Acer Chromebook from Dana Wollman over on Engadget who makes the point of wondering what the build quality will be against that of the Samsung Series 5 but of course the price difference will be enough for many.

Paul Lilly on MaximumPC also notes that Acer says it will be out this month and so it should be with us in the next few days. Acer CTO Arif Maskatia said “We are pleased to be one of Google’s leading launch partners delivering a new experience in cloud computing for customers with our new Acer AC700 Chromebook,” adding, “The Acer AC700 represents the future of computing as it shows how they can access the cloud to vastly improve the simplicity, security and speed of their online experience.”
