Apple iPad & iPad 2 Claim Huge Share of World Tablet Market

It’s no secret that Apple has seen huge success with its iPad tablet device despite the increasing amount of competition in this market, such as the Android Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab or the BlackBerry PlayBook on the QNX operating system. There are countless other tablets also trying to compete against the iPad but we hear that the Apple iPad and iPad 2 now claim a huge share of the world tablet market.

It may amaze you to know that new figures reveal that in the U.S. the iPad accounts for 97% of tablet traffic while Android tablets and ‘others’ amounted to a tiny percentage. We reported many times on the phenomenal success of the iPad 2 when it came out, with long waiting times for shipping and retail stores sold out, and in fact there were a staggering 4.69 million iPads sold just in the last quarter.

These figures came to us from Sarah Yin over on PCMag, sourced from a comScore report and it seems that Apple continues to fend off its rivals and we can only wait and see if new tablets such as the HP TouchPad and upcoming tablets on Windows 8 will be able to gain a foothold in the market. The smartphone market is somewhat more diverse though with Android devices now accounting for 54% of mobile Web traffic with the Apple iPhone iOS handset claiming a 36% share.

A useful graph has been compiled from the comScore figures by Business Insider, (see above), and as far as the global market for tablet traffic is concerned the iPad has more than an 89% market share in 13 countries with 99% in the U.K. and a phenomenal 100% in Japan for example. Over on TG Daily, Raven Lovecraft gives some context to these figures by telling us that comScore also looked at the amount of Internet traffic driven by tablet devices and in fact for online browsing in the U.S. a mere 1.8% of activity comes from tablet devices, with 93.3% from computers and another 4.6% from mobile phones.

It certainly seems though that as far as tablets are concerned the somewhat iconic iPad has made its mark and looks like it may keep its huge proportion of the tablet market for some time to come. What are your thoughts on the iPad having such a stranglehold? Are you surprised by just how far ahead it is in the market? Let us know with your comments.
