Samsung Galaxy S2 US Release Roundup: Coming Soon

We’ve been keeping you informed about the Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II) for as long as we can remember it seems. We’ve answered many questions about this handset and reported all the news and also speculation but what many people still want to know about the most, is a U.S release date. We thought we’d put together all we know so far and what has been rumored, in a Galaxy S2 US release roundup to get you up to speed.

Just at the weekend we took a look at the Galaxy S2 against the HTC Sensation 4G with a video comparison and also advised readers who are already lucky enough to have the Galaxy S2 how to get the most out of it. OSM’s Maddy Rowe also posted a retailer roundup a short while ago, which detailed countries and retailers where the Galaxy S2 was already available, such as South Korea and the UK and you may also be interested in our Galaxy S2 review roundup. We’ll tell you what we know so far by rounding up our previous US release articles so click on the links for more detail on any particular aspects.

One of the first times we mentioned a US release was in our article back at the beginning of May when we told how AT&T may be the first US carrier to get the Galaxy S2 as the handset had passed through the FCC. We also told readers when the unlocked version of the Galaxy S2 became available to order on Amazon US, for those who didn’t want to wait for a carrier release. In another article we then gave details of the various names that the Galaxy S2 might be released under in the U.S., the Within on Sprint, the Function on Verizon and the Attain on AT&T. There was also news of T-Mobile possibly being another carrier although we have found no further confirmation of that yet.

The first signs we had of a US release next month was a release rumor for Sprint from an anonymous Sprint “insider” who said that the Within would be coming in late July. We then had a similar rumor for a release of the Function on Verizon, also for July, although the source of this story later backtracked and said they were referring to another product. However it still seems to be being widely reported that the Verizon version of the Galaxy S2 is likely to be released in July.

More recently we told how the Attain for AT&T had now been spotted on the Samsung US Facebook page and the image available showed some slight differences for the AT&T version of the Galaxy S2. We noted that the fact that an AT&T branded handset had been photographed indicated that a release was closer. We then heard more news about the Sprint release of the Galaxy S2 as several Sprint employees let slip a July 24 release date. Although of course this is conjecture, the source of this story has previously given reliable information and other signs indicate this release date could be accurate. The last information we had for the US release was that cases for the Galaxy S2 have now been spotted at a major retailer. Amazon has listed cases for the “Samsung Galaxy S2/Attain/Within/Function so it certainly looks as though it will be here sooner rather than later and with the names and carriers that we thought.

You may also be interested in release details so far for Canada where it looks as though they could possibly get the S2 first for North America. We informed how the Galaxy S2 there is likely to be carried by Bell, Rogers and TELUS. Again the likely release is next month and a “coming soon” site now shows on the Galaxy S2 Samsung Canada site. Our most recent article about this is about how Canadian carrier SaskTel has announced via Twitter that it will be selling the Galaxy S2 from next month.

All-in-all then, although we concede that much of the information out there is based on rumors rather than fact, there’s an awful lot to suggest the Galaxy S2 will appear in the US and Canada next month. In fact we’d be pretty amazed if the Galaxy S2 doesn’t now arrive in July. Are you waiting for the Galaxy S2 in North America? How much longer are you prepared to wait? Let us know with your comments.

My contract with AT&T is up in mid July and my Tilt II has lost it’s sparkle… I truely do hope that July is the release date!

I am in the same boat as you man! figures crossed.

I just don’t understand why the S II. doesn’t appear to have a Tmobile release. I’ve read that the S II was originally tested on the Tmobile network and Tmobile also carriers its predecessors (Vibrant, Galaxy S). This would be a crushing blow.

why would you get the g2x, the htc sensation that just came out for tmo has waaaaay better reviews and has better specs.

not true g2x is faster. the only reason why it seems better is because of the cool animations that attract ppl’s attention

My AT&T contract was upgrade eligibile at the beginning of June. I can’t say that I am not getting annoyed that the S II is available everywhere but here…

  • Jubin Kim

i no longer follow carriers… i follow the latest and greatest phones. Whichever carrier has my choice of phone will get my business.

    • Anonymous

I don’t have much choice as I am quite rural and AT&T is it here for good coverage…

Unless AT&T’s “leaked” photos are not really the S2 I’ll be buying the unlocked version. Hopefully Verizon announces it soon so I can leave AT&T all together.

These us carriers are taking forever!!! The HTC Evo 3D is starting to look like a good option.

The EVO 3D is a gimmick. This is coming from a current EVO 4G owner. I’m waiting for the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy S2.

I don’t know how much longer I can wait…I’m tempted to buy the Sensation on Tmobile as thats the carrier I have and plan to stick to. I will never go to ATT(atleast not on my own terms) or any other carrier. Samsung you better come to tmobile and fast!

Well that’s too bad because ATT bought T-mobile so you will go ATT after all…
I am ATT and i was seriously considering going to Verizon due to all the crap. But well… Verizon keeps talking about ATT and how they screw you by removing unlimited data plan and yet they will do exactly the same pretty soon.
Why i stick with ATT now? because we you upgrade your phone you still keep your old unlimited plan, which i have. Verizon? apparently not…
Don’t spit on the neighbor when you’re worse then him.

      So well… i guess it’s like politics… they all suck anyway…

ive done 2 years with Verizon Wireless and im a ATT customer since 2002. VZW is the most HORRIBLE company ive ever dealt with. they are WAY worse then ATT.

I want this or iPhone 5. going to wait for both to appear then hear the reviews (and see which ones available for Sprint)…. Never buy bleeding edge!! I learned my lesson on that with the BB Storm.

I’ve waited two years to find a phone with AT&T that would perform the way I want it to. I was seriously considering the iPhone 4 until I saw the HTC Sense. Then I went in to AT&T and saw the Samsung Infuse and had almost decided to get that one until I went home to do research on it and accidentally found the Galaxy S2. I actually dream about this phone! I’ve waited this long with my sad little Blackberry 8900. I’m definitely willing to wait another month.

I’ve waited for the GS2 since February 2011 … I understand from a Samsung friend of mine that the phone will NOT come out before SEPTEMBER 2011 in the USA … I guess I’ll keep waiting until something better comes out, like the Nexus 4G?

Samsung is a very very stupid company. They are bombarding the market with a new phone almost every month. Confusing consumers, the market and themselves. Looks like they can’t even track what they are putting out. I hate their practice and oh also the fact that they delayed the 10.1 Tablet and finally came out with a lousy specs. No USB, No SD. 3 megapixel front cam (what are they thinking those fools). Send them a message by rejecting their rush to the market and over saturate the market products.

For almost 2 years I’ve been using a hand-me-down pink Motorola SLVR (circa 2005 w/ Cingular stamped on it) because my considerate 4 yr old daughter washed my 2 month old “dirty” iphone. I waited patiently for the past 2 years to get an upgrade. In anticipation of my soon to expire contract I did my research and excitedly decided I wanted to switch to Verizon and get this Galaxy SII. Well, contract is now expired and well, I’m still waiting………… To say I’m drooling over this phone would be an understatement. My senses are aching to get my fingers on this phone and be able to text without my fingers cramping up. My eyes are tearing up just imagining the big, clear, colorful screen. My mind is about to explode in anticipation of being able to use the internet from a smartphone again. My stomach aches to be able to take pics and video of my kids again. So, how much longer am I prepared too wait????? Not much looooonnnnngeeeerrrrr, Verizon!

If I purchase the unlocked S2 from Amazon, could I use it with my Verizon cell phone carrier? I’ve only gone to the Verizon store and bought the phones they offer, but I am seriously drooling over this phone…

No you can’t. The Unlocked one is GSM….Verizon is CDMA

I have a feeling these drooling people may be backed by Samsung’s “Make A Hype” department!. Don’t drooool too much and get the ATT Infuse which is very similar. Its fast enough for droolers with a single processor

I’m eligible for an upgrade July 7th on Verizon. I have the original Motorola Droid and I WAS waiting for the Motorola Droid Bionic, and I was excited about it, until I saw the demos & reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S2.

I AM GOING TO CAMP OUT AND WAIT UNTIL THE GALAXY S2 COMES TO VERIZON. I’M GOING TO WAIT IT OUT! This phone is that great.

I have a Nokia N93, to say that I don’t upgrade often would be an understatement. My service is provided by T-mobile, which has consistently offered only the low end of high priced units. I had to buy an unlocked phone because their phones were so inadequate. I would like to replace my phone with an item that won’t become obsolete too quickly. Samsung has repeatedly delayed their release dates. Guess they haven’t realized that tech and fresh fish have about the same shelf life. The i-phone will be available to almost every network by Christmas. Does Samsung think their shiny new phone will look as cool when consumers have an i-phone in one hand and the S2 in the other? If Samsung management were running the D-Day Invasion we would have been pushed back into the sea.

I tested the iphone 4 against several droids, was surprised how slow it was. Nice screen, though smallish, nice overall size (fit in pocket easily) but very slow using 3g. The HTC and Samsung smartphones were much faster, and the Charge had a better display. No smartphone currently available is perfect, but the S2 sounds close……

Bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 today, simply an amazing phone. Goodbye Apple 😀

Did you have an Apple that you’re saying goodbye to??? Or you dreamed of having it?

I will definitely wait for the Galaxy S2 even till Christmas unless something superior shows up before then. My AT&T contract expired this month. Have upgraded 3 phones in the family plan for those who cannot wait. But as for me, I find no use in getting something else now with an imminent release of GS2. Will stick with my poor LG Incite and wait–impatiently.

I have a question that I would like some GREAT answers to…

According to all the “speculation” on all the sites, Verizon would be due to launch 3 phones in July: Droid 3, Function (S2), and Droid Bionic.

Some, or all of these, are not going to happen don’t you think????

The galaxy s2, by quadrant and other tests is the fastest phone in the world. I can’t wait. Honestly, it shouldn’t be taking this long for it to release, but I can’t wait. USA
