Motorola Droid 2 Global Verizon Update: Gingerbread Arrives

We like to keep readers informed of all the latest news regarding their smartphones and for Droid 2 Global owners we recently told how a Gingerbread update was on its way. We also told how Droid 2 Global price cuts suggests that the Droid 3 release on Verizon was close. The good news today is that the Motorola Droid 2 Global Verizon update has now arrived to give you the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.

A Verizon page is now available with information about the 103MB update to version 4.5.600 along with download instructions. If you don’t head to the page to update you’ll eventually receive a reminder from Verizon. The Gingerbread OS is the major improvement but there are also other changes. Icons at the bottom of the user interface will be in a user-customizable dock with the option to add three links of your choice for example.

The UI has also received a refresh, there’s a Download Manager app, a better battery performance when using Bluetooth and WiFi, some fixes and more according to Vlad Savov over on Engadget. If you head to the Verizon page linked to above you’ll be able to find a PDF for more about upgrade benefits and another PDF with download instructions. Meanwhile Adam Mills over on Gotta Be Mobile points out that with the Gingerbread update for the Droid X, Droid Pro and now Droid 2 Global, it’s just original Droid 2 owners who are missing out now.

Are you a Droid 2 Global user looking forward to downloading the Gingerbread update? Let us know what you think of the improvements by sending us your comments.

Just tried to get the update, but it is still saying I have the latest version of the OS….hopefully that changes soon.

I have had the same issue all morning. When I call tech support at Verizon they first don’t know about the upgrade and then level 2 says I still have the current version. When I reference the 3 page pdf for downloading on their site they explain that Motorola sends the updates out in waves and it could take a week or two to get the update.

Do you know if you have to be on Verizon’s network to receive the update, I’m asking because I am outside of US right now…

    Thanks!
