China Can Now Get VOD Service From Warner Bros

China will now be able to enjoy video on demand courtesy of Warner Brothers. The movie company announced that “YOU on Demand” would be the country’s first pay per view service.

According to reports from Mashable, Warner Bros has a 20 year joint venture partnership with China Home Cinema. As normal users will have a large catalog of movies to choose from, both new and old. As an example of how up to date the movie library is, consumers can watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

By the end of the summer, Warner’s VOD service should be up and running with the potential to reach 200 million households. An advantage of launching in China is that they have the fastest growing film market. The Independent has reported that box office income stood at $1.5 billion, 10 times as much as in 2005.

There is a big downside to China’s movie craze, and that is pirate copying. The country has a serious problem with the illegal selling of fake blockbuster movies for cheap prices. If Warner’s VOD service is selling for more than the cheap copies that many Chinese rely on, it does not take much guessing what offer the people will choose to take.
