BBC To Trial Their 3D Coverage At Wimbledon 2011

Out of all of the main broadcasters, the BBC has been the least enthusiastic about the prospect of bringing 3D to our screen’s. They have been taking the sit back and watch approach, looking at how successful it has been for the likes of Sky and Virgin. The BBC has now decided to start testing its 3D out, with the debut coming at this year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament.

The 3D industry has had a very up and down year with so much going on. Last year Sky and Virgin launched their 3D channels which received generally positive reviews, however a number of manufacturers announced 3D TV sales were not as good as expected. For those that do own a 3D TV and have access to the BBC’s HD channel, you will be able to view the tennis in 3D, according to reports from The Guardian.

We have seen a drop in 3D cinema sales as a result of more fans getting sick and tired of the cheap con that all theaters and film studios are playing. Avatar laid down the benchmark for true 3D and so far no film has even come close to matching this. Half of the films out in cinemas are now in 3D, with ticket prices just under £10 each! You barely even notice the film is actually in 3D most of the time.

Home 3D on the other hand is much better as a result of the active shutter glasses, so Wimbledon in 3D may actually turn out to be worth a watch. Electric Pig has reported that a small number of other 3D projects from the BBC will take part over the course of the year on behalf on the license payer. Personally I would like to see the BBC bring 3D in on a permanent basis, what about you?

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO BBC 3D. HAVING BOUGHT A 3D SET LAST DECEMBER, I REFUSE TO BEING BLACMAILD BY SKY WHO ONLY GIVES YOU 3D IF YOU BUT THE VERY EXPENSIVE PACKAGES, MOST OF WHICH I CAN GET FROM VIRGIN, SO I WAIT AND HOPE THE OTHER COMPANIES WILL TAKE IT UP SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
