Apple Back to School 2011 Offers: Likely Launch Wednesday

Last month we gave readers some pre-news from Apple’s WWDC 2011 in which we discussed speculation about the annual Back to School Promotion and what offers there might be. We now have more details about Apple’s Back to School promotion and news that it may launch on Wednesday.

Originally it was thought that a free iPod touch may be offered on Apple Mac sales or money offered towards another iPod as well as the usual educational discounts being on offer. It was also widely speculated that on the purchase of a Mac there could be a major discount of $200 off an iPad. However it now seems that free iPods may not be part of this year’s promotion and that instead Apple will offer a $100 iTunes Gift Card.

The news comes to us from Mark Gurman over on 9to5Mac and adds to the mystery of whether there will be a new iPod this year. As Gurman notes the Back to School promotion is usually around 3 months before Apple’s September press conference. This is usually music-related and introduces new iPods and clearly by giving away free iPods it reduced stocks conveniently before the next iPod arrives. We also told of recent reports that the developers’ version of iOS 5 contains hints of new iPhone’s and iPad’s this year but no new iPod touch and this also ties in with rumors of a September release of the iPhone 5 as this could then be the focus of the fall press conference.

Over on Cult of Mac, Killian Bell also reports on this news and notes the likelihood of a Wednesday launch for the promotion. Bell makes the point that the iTunes gift card is not a bad offer, but asks how students will feel about getting an iTunes gift card instead of a free iPod touch. We feel this could lead to a fair amount of disappointment amongst those waiting for the Back to School promotion. Were you expecting more from Apple? Let us know with your comments.

iTunes gift card or XBox 360…seems like a no-brainer. Looks like I picked the wrong year to consider switching to Apple.

you read my mind.If that’s true I’m certainly going for xbox

I have been waiting for this sale for a long time. Very disappointing if it’s an Itunes card. I want to buy the 27 inch Imac, and I was hoping buy the ipad at a discount. I don’t really need the Ipad, and I won’t buy it without the discount. I may just upgrade my desktop. This news really sucks, I was so looking forward to jumping into the macs, but this is a deal breaker for me.

I think an awful lot of people will be disappointed unless Apple surprises us with something more. Thanks for reading.

I was really hoping for the iPad discount, and I will only buy a new mac book if they make that deal. If it’s really just a stupid itunes gift card, they can keep the card, the iPad and the laptop too.

This will be very disappointing if this is true. As previously mentioned the PC deal which gives you a free X-Box 360 with the purchase of a (much cheaper than any of the Macs) PC, makes this look like an exceptionally bad deal to most people. They could at least offer a $200 iTunes card which is more in keeping with their previous offer.

I will not be buying a new mac portable if there is no free ipod promotion.

wow, if this is what Apple has come up with, it’s a big waste. the year Microsoft decides to give out xbox 360’s too….now I’ll have to think about this one.

Won’t be buying a mac if this is the case. PC free Xbox 360 deal looks much better.

Big disappointment, I’ve been waiting for this promotion to kick in for a while now and have to say an itunes gift card would be a major let down. At least make it an apple gift card.

I’ll definitely be dissapointed. I held off last year because of lack of funds, and I’ve been saving to get a MacBook Pro for a year now. I’m also using a granny 2006 video iPod, and need to upgrade to a new one. I just bought an iPhone, so I can use that, but wanted to use the new iPod for extra songs or give it to my parents. At least match the $200, I say. Apple rumors have been wrong (Back to School at WWDC, among many others) so I hope they are wrong again.

I’ll be definitely disapointed too, I think a discount on iPad would have been much better…

I have been waiting for months for this promotion, so yes I will be disappointed. I have been really excited about the idea of an ipod touch and was even going to upgrade to 32GB. Sigh…

Yes, I am very disappointed. I have little need for an itunes gift card. I really wanted an ipod touch and I was going to spend the money to get it with this deal, but if it’s not free with a rebate…I am not going to upgrade my ipod. I will just get the computer and free printer.

Sucks. Apple is starting to become stingy, they even prevented self installation of new hard drives. Looks like I will have to consider a PC then. I waited for this stupid promo and now all they give out is a useless Itunes card.

Itunes gift card? What is this, a gift my aunt gave me on my 14th birthday!? I really hope that this is just another rumor. Microsoft gives you a xbox360 and apple gives you a gift card? How annoying. Apple your computers are good, but not that good.

Unless Apple plans to update their online stores all together (US, UK ect) at the same time, then it appears that this Wednesday launch day rumour is again incorrect, seeing as its 13:30 here in the UK and the promotion doesn’t appear to have started, at least it hasnt online. Point being, its still 05:30 in CA.

That said, I havent been into an Apple store yet so I don’t know if they’ve rolled it out into their UK stores..

it doesnt start today either. i just called my local apple store and they said it isnt starting today and they dont know if and when it will.

The ‘reputable’ source @chronicwire tweeted earlier that the launch date has been delayed and that the $100 giftcard is true. I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty gutted.

A couple of years ago, an iTunes card would have been ‘meh’ – personally, I still buy my music on CD and rip it, but I understand that younger people often don’t buy music at all.

On the other hand, it’s pretty easy to spend $100 on Apps – especially if the same card can be used on the Mac App Store.

And it could be an attractive offer to people who already have an iPhone, iPod, or iPad – which I’m guessing is a sizeable number of potential Mac owners.

A discount on an iPad would be more useful to me but I think some people are missing the point. The promotion was never worth $200, it was about clearing the channel of stock that Apple had already paid for.

As for a PC with a free XBox – that’s fine if you’re a gamer who doesn’t yet have an XBox in the house. But that’s also going to be of limited appeal. And neither of them can run OS X software.

I will be returning to school this Summer; it’s been 10 years since I was a student. I need to upgrade my computer (I have an old, yet still functioning MacBook) and have been waiting for the Sandy Bridge Airs to come out, and the Back to School promotion.

For me, an iTunes gift card is practically useless. For my return to school, I need hardware, not music. A discount on an iPad would be ideal, allowing me to use the iPad and laptop in sync for presentations, showing others how seamlessly Apple products work together AND getting me used to using iOS and a tablet so when I graduate, I have the skills to use them at work already AND encourage me to go out and buy the new latest and greatest as I reenter the workforce.

I know Apple doesn’t go trolling the comments on the Internet looking for opinions and/or advice, but if this rumor is true it is a HUGE missed opportunity for them. And if I have to pay full price for additional hardware myself, why wouldn’t I look at a Galaxy Tab instead?

Well, we now see what happens when you have a sale every year for about five years and then you change it up. People are not happy, not one bit happy. Like many I have been waiting for this summer promo but even more important, I have been waiting for the updated MB Airs. Sale or not sale, I will be buying when they arrive. And no, I would never buy a PC just because I got an Xbox. I am also not under 30.

I waited months for this promotion, and went through finals week and 15 pages of essays with no laptop after my previous macbook was stolen so I could get an ipod touch when the promotion started (my old ipod is broken). This is just awful.

THIS BETTER NOT BE TRUE….APPLE MAJOR FAIL ! I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR OVER A YEAR TO GET THE FREE IPOD!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=672727742 Michael Heath Geiwitz

Lame! Uber-LAME!!! Seriously, who actually uses iTunes to download music? Certainly not someone shelling out $2000 on a MBPro like I will be doing. Though I prefer Creative’s Zen mp3 players over iPod, I still could’ve used the free iPod. Still waiting to purchase the MBPro in July anyway when Lion is out. Guess I’ll just find a sucker to sell the $100 gift card to for $75 and put it towards a Zen.

This is the last straw. I was on the fence about mac but this promotion is infuriating. I don’t even buy music or apps.Im going to have to settle for a pc
