Facebook Trialing Live “Happening Now” Feature

Facebook are testing out a nifty new feature called “happening now”. It involves showing you what your friends are doing at that exact time, via a sidebar on the news feed.

Information will be displayed on the right hand side of the page, such as what various activities your friends are going on the site, for example “liking” statuses and writing comments. According to Mashable you can click on any of the live activities and it will expand and show more information without you having to even leave the feed.

The happening now feature will replace the sidebar which currently displays upcoming events, pokes and friend recommendations etc. I think that is is likely that when happening now does launch it will be optional. The new feature has been likened to a Twitter feed, which raises the question of whether there will be a character limit.

At the moment Facebook is only testing the feature with a small fraction of users, but it is expected that more people will be able to test happening now in the coming weeks. Does it look like a feature that would help you and is worth adding to the site? Let us know your thoughts on this by dropping a comment below.

It’s so annoying. I usually like being a specially selected individual…but I fail to see what’s wrong with the events box. In fact, I find it immensely helpful at points.
