Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II) US Release News: On Amazon US Unlocked

We’ve been bringing you news thick and fast about the Samsung Galaxy S2 or S II Android smartphone and one of the questions we’re asked most at the moment is about release news for the U.S. At the weekend we told you about a rumored release date on Sprint in late July but today we have heard that the Galaxy S2 is finally available on Amazon US. However, Amazon is selling the unlocked version with a shipping date of between 1 to 3 months, so when you will actually get your hands on it is questionable.

We know though just how many of you are waiting for the U.S. release and so you may still want to go for the unlocked version although the price is $699.99 with free shipping, according to Christopher Hudson over on GizmoCrunch, sourced from Amazon.com. Hudson stresses that Amazon Wireless stores are not yet selling the handset, just Amazon US, and that’s why the phone is only available for sale at the moment without contract.

We’ve already given readers the names that the Galaxy S 2 will go under for the various US carriers and as we’ve said it’s rumored that the S2 or Within for Sprint will be released at the end of July, so it’s a gamble at the moment, whether to wait for a carrier release, or opt for the unlocked version. If the Sprint release that is rumored is correct you might prefer to wait for that. However of course if that’s not accurate, and bearing in mind no release dates have been announced for other U.S. carriers, then you may plump for the Amazon unlocked Galaxy S2, although the shipping window is rather wide.

If you want a brief recap on specs the Galaxy S2 has a whopping 1.2GHz dual-core processor, which earlier today we compared to the Atrix 4G, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, much praised in our review roundup, and an 8-megapixel camera. Earlier today we also gave you news that the HTC EVO 3D, another impressive handset coming to Sprint, will have at least one month’s head start on sales against the Galaxy S2.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on this. Are you willing to take your chance and wait for the Galaxy S2’s release on your favorite carrier, or maybe you’re drawn to purchasing the unlocked S2? Let us know with your comments.

If you ordered this unlocked phone from Amazon, would it work on Verizon now?

no. because verizon uses crappy CDMA technology and this unlocked phone uses GSM. they are two totally different technologies. why ruin a great phone with verizons network anyways? lol
