Where is the Motorola Droid Bionic? Maybe it’s the Targa After All

We’ve been bringing you news on the Motorola Droid Bionic, a 4G handset for Verizon’s LTE network, for almost as long as we can remember. After the smartphone was delayed for improvements we then heard that the Targa may be a replacement. Recently though we told of a Motorola webpage that briefly leaked a few products before being pulled and the Targa was listed which led us first to believe that maybe this was a different handset after all. However on reflection we’re now wondering if the Droid Bionic will ever appear and that maybe the Targa is its replacement after all.

It’s a very confusing picture that’s being painted so please bear with me. Many people, including many of OSM’s readers, were very disappointed when the Motorola Droid Bionic was delayed and then further news came that improvements would be made to this much-awaited phone to enhance the consumer experience which seemed to placate people somewhat. We then heard more about the improvements, which included an improved form factor and expanded features and functionality and once again the name Targa was being bandied around.

However when we saw the Motorola leaked images last week (linked to in first paragraph) the brief glimpse of the Targa looked to be a very different form factor indeed to the Droid Bionic that we previously knew and loved and as already stated, that led us to believe that the Targa was maybe a different phone altogether. We also recently reported that the Droid Bionic was actually in testing at last after hearing news of a leaked benchmark result and the appearance of a new TI OMAP processor for the handset. However an article by Jean Xiam Sun over on Pop Herald has got us thinking. If the Motorola Droid Bionic is ever to be released as the Droid Bionic, why didn’t it appear with the other leaked products on the Motorola webpage?

Pop Herald suggests a couple of possibilities for the Targa that appeared in the leak. Either it’s an LTE handset for AT&T’s upcoming LTE network or maybe it really is the ‘new’ Droid Bionic. Meanwhile Christopher Hudson over on GizmoCrunch also asks if the Droid Bionic is coming. Hudson reminds us that the leak also included the Xoom 2 tablet, though to be coming around August time, and points out that if Motorola was looking that far ahead with its new product listings, the absence of the Droid Bionic looks rather peculiar. Hudson also feels that the original Droid Bionic as we knew it, could be long gone, and that the Targa, looks set to be the new and improved version of the Bionic.

Even with our recent stories of the Droid Bionic we still have many readers saying that they continue to wait for it and so hope we have more concrete news for you soon. We’d like to hear your thought on this. Would you be disappointed if the Bionic as we knew it never made it to the marketplace, or would you be quite willing to opt for the Targa if it’s a new and improved version of the Bionic? Let us know with your comments.

Come on Motorola! Way too much drama! dual core in a Verizon 4G LTE, with a nice high res Q screen, that’s all we want, uh! and the two cameras for skype, that’s it! oh! I forgot at least 8 gig. camera well….HURRY UP!

The Verizon 4G phones currently out all have a few good things going for them, but with still room for improvement. Hopefully Motorola is truley making those changes that every one is talking about and releasing this phone. And soon!!! I have been sitting on an upgrade for 3 months now and I an not willing to switch carriers.

If or when it comes out, i hope verizon will not have gotten rid of the 4g unlimited plans

Good luck with that. I’m sure Verizon will not offer it with these new super phones coming out. The ones people have been waiting for.

I don’t care who comes out with it, what it’s called or if it’s on Verizon’s or AT&T’s 4G LTE network as long as it’s a dual core, 4G LTE phone with a 4.3 ” qHD display, dual cameras (8 MP, 2 MP) with a battery that lasts throughout most of the day under moderate use. It seems like the dual core processor/4G LTE radio/qHD combination is a real battery drainer. Because of the two year contract, you want to make the best choice possible. Who knows when a phone will come out with these specs.

Just give me the Samsung Galaxy S2 in a LTE version for Verizon. Screw the Bionic.

Looks like I am going to have to go with the Thunderbolt….Getting tired of waiting for the Bionic. If they would at least tell us that it will be coming out for sure then I would wait for the Bionic…….VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!

The CEO over at Motorola must be feeling very foolish to announce the droid bionic in January and here we are and its already June and still no product. Verizon keeps advertising 4G but nobody can provide a decent phone to use on its network. How stupid are these companies anyways.
