iPhone 5 Release Closer Than We Think? Journalists to WWDC

We have been bringing you news and speculation about the iPhone 5 (or 4S) for some time, since around the time of the iPhone 4 release in fact, and one thing everybody thought they were sure about was a release in June 2011. Then came the rumors of a delay until the fall but we’ve now heard news that the iPhone 5 release may be closer than we thought as it appears that journalists have been invited to Apple’s WWDC next month.

The release saga is indeed complicated and we keep hearing varying reports. Just recently we wrote about the fact that any hope we had of a summer iPhone release had been virtually wiped out by the Foxconn plant explosion, we then suggested some credible alternatives, the HTC Sensation 4G and the HTC EVO 3D. More recently we then had news of teasers that suggested a June or July release may be on the cards after all, but then news of an improved camera seemed to tie in with a fall release though as yet of course, nothing is still confirmed. Turning to Apple’s WWDC, which begins on June 6, at one time this was when we expected to see an appearance of the new iPhone but those expectations were scuppered by news that WWDC this year would be all about software, rather than hardware, namely the new Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5.

However an article over on ElectricPig has reported on speculation that maybe the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S as it’s referred to, could be making a surprise appearance after all. This is due to the fact that sources have said that Apple’s U.K. PR team has invited journalists to the event in San Francisco. Moreover, it appears to be the PR team dedicated to the iPhone that is persuading journalists to head to the U.S., leading to hopes rising for an iPhone 5 possibility. ElectricPig seems pretty certain this means the next iPhone unveiling is coming at WWDC and I suppose some might say it’s an lot to expect to ask journalists to fly to the U.S. just for software news, although we’d still say this was a definite possibility.

Meanwhile though, Stephen M. Hackett over on MacGasm refers to this latest rumor and also points out that the journalists could merely have been invited because of software being previewed and reminds us that we might be hearing more developments on Apple’s cloud service. This leads him to conclude that it still seems unlikely that we’ll see an iPhone 5 launch before the fall, and that a June preview would be very early.

We’re uncertain either way, which we know is not what you probably want to hear but if the next iPhone is not unveiled at WWDC then you may be interested in an article from OSM’s Tim Ollason who suggests that if you don’t want to wait, the Samsung Galaxy S2 could be a good alternative. The Galaxy S2 has yet to see a U.S release but something tells us it is likely to be available in the States before the next iPhone, though we’d be pleased to be proved wrong.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you still hoping for a summer iPhone release or maybe you feel it’s much more likely to be released later in the year? Let us know with your comments.
