Cornwall To Trial 4G In September: The First Step For The UK?

Here in the UK, we still look far from enjoying the super fast wireless delights of 4G technology, but a start has been made! In September the first 4G LTE broadband technology will be tested in Cornwall.

The venture will be undertaken by a partnership of 3 of the UK’s biggest telecommunication companies, calling themselves Everything Everywhere. Electric Pig has reported that this conglomeration is comprised of Orange, T-Mobile and BT. The 2 mobile networks had earlier joined together to offer both of their customers joint signal.

The Financial Times has reported that the companies will trial their service in 200 Cornish homes and businesses near Newquay. It has been reported that 100 mobile and 100 fixed line customers in a 25km square area of St Newlyn East, will be the first in the UK to see how amazingly fast 4G is. Downloads will never be the same!

If the trial is successful then hopefully LTE will be introduced all across the UK, but don’t hold your breath. The US are currently enjoying it left right and centre, courtesy of their networks like AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. By the time it arrives nationwide in the UK, the US will probably be introducing 5G technology. Is it the right time to bring LTE to the UK?
