HTC Sensation 4G or EVO 3D: Credible iPhone 5 Alternatives

With the delay to the expected release of the Apple iPhone 5 (or 4S) it’s interesting to note that we are seeing some really credible iPhone alternatives. We’ve already seen the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon and the impressive Samsung Galaxy S II is due to release in the U.S. soon. Now we want to take a look at two HTC handsets, the Sensation 4G and EVO 3D coming to T-Mobile and Sprint soon. Neither carrier has the current iPhone so one of these could be a good option, especially if you’re an Android fan.

Yesterday we published an article comparing the Galaxy S2 (or S II) and the HTC Sensation and comments we received were very divided over which was best. We have a feeling that comparing two HTC handsets it may be even more difficult to decide which is the most impressive. We’ve published many articles now on both the HTC Sensation and HTC EVO 3D and recent examples for the HTC Sensation include an unboxing, news of a June release and price on T-Mobile, and a comparison with the Sony Ericcson Xperia Neo. For the HTC EVO 3D we’ve told about a rumored arrival date next month on Sprint, details for pre-orders, a comparison with the Sharp 3D Aquos and also today we had news on a leaked price, so click on the links if any of those aspects interests you.

Looking at the specs for these two phones we see that the HTC Sensation has a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, the same as for the HTC EVO 3D. Both handsets also run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, both also feature HTC Sense UI and both are 4G capable. The HTC Sensation has a 4.3-inch Super LCD screen while the EVO 3D has a 4.3-inch qHD display. The HTC Sensation also features an 8-megapixel camera with flash, capable of 1080p HD video capture. This is where the HTC EVO 3D slips a little as it has a 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facer, however it’s important to remember that the EVO 3D is capable or video recording and photos in both 2D and 3D. An article over on Pop Herald also looks at these two handsets and points out that there’s very little to choose between them and we agree.

If you want to find out much more about either of these two handsets then check out the product pages at HTC here for the Sensation 4G, and here for the EVO 3D. When it really comes down to making a choice it might be the carrier or the design and feel of the handset that helps you opt for the right one for you, but we think both of these Android smartphones have a lot going for them.

What are your thoughts on the HTC Sensation 4G and the HTC EVO 3D and how will you choose between them, or maybe you have another handset in mind? Let us know by sending us your comments.

"The HTC Sensation has a 4.3-inch Super LCD screen while the EVO 3D has a 4.3-inch qHD display" – is like "one car is red while the other is hybrid". Seriously, comparing technology of one to the size and resolution of the other???

Far as i know the Sensation also had a qHD screen not an S-LCD, Its even stated on HTC'S website http://www.htc.com/uk/product/sensation/specifica

Both the EVO 3D and the Sensation 4G have qHD Super-LCD displays. Another thing to note is that the EVO 3D has 1GB RAM, and the Sensation 4G only has 768MB of RAM. I’m for sure getting the EVO 3D!

sensation dosent have a super qhd lcd display according to htc website http://www.htc.com/us/products/sensation4g-tmobil
the evo does have a super qhd lcd display though

qHD means simply that the display is 540×960 pixels. That is, qHD is a comment on the number and arrangement of pixels.

S-LCD is actually a brand name used by Sony and Samsung for their wide viewing angle TFT-LCDs. LG (for example) sell their wide viewing angle TFT-LCD as IPS LCD. Other manufacturers sell wide viewing angle TFT-LCD under other names.

In short, according to their website, the Sensation/Sensation 4G has a 960×540 pixel screen, initial reviews indicate that it is a wide viewing angle screen of some description. The brand name of the screen is not mentioned. It could very well be a Sony/Samsung screen (that is Super LCD).

The EVO 3D also has a 960×540 pixel screen. The brand of the screen is Super LCD, meaning that it is a Sony or Samsung wide viewing angle screen.

On the basis of this, you can't say that the Sensation certainly has an S-LCD brand screen, but you similarly can't say that it doesn't.

For me, I'd rather have the 8MP camera on the Sensation. The 3D is kinda cool, but it is only 5MP and the 8MP I can use every day.

    • kgh

8mp wont make a difference in your photo quality. and having 1 gb of ram is very important

i will definetly upgrade 2 htc evo 3d on sprint when it comes out i currently gave a samsung epic 4g but its time to upgrade 2 a dual core proccesor phone this phone is a great phone even without 3d the 3d feature is just like a bonus to this awsome phone
this aricle is wrong when it says that the sensation has a super lcd qhd display the evo 3d has a super lcd qhd display the sensation is only a qhd display

Seriously? ? …. both HTC phones are SLCD, 940×560. Do you think that 132 MB of onboard ram will be noticeable?!? I think not. SD cards are quick. More noticeable will be the picture quality difference. It really comes down to personal preference. 3D is neat but ” gimmicky” on a cell. You can’t go wrong on either phone provided the battery can perform.
