Foursquare Checkins Can Get You Cheaper Gas

Here at OSM we often write about developments for Foursquare, the popular location-based social network. Only recently we told how the daily checkin record had been broken, and then how people were checking in to a world without Osama Bin Laden. Today we have some good news for Foursquare users as you can now get cheaper gas with checkins.

The deal was announced on Facebook and Twitter by Murphy USA, a chain of gas stations with over 1,000 locations in Sam’s Club or Walmart parking lots. With gas prices concerning many of us this is a great idea and offers users $2 off a gas purchase of $20 if they check in on Foursquare. On top of that a free pack of Stride gum is also being handed out, according to Todd Wasserman over on Mashable.

This is not the first move from the Murphy chain to get involved with social media marketing and the company also has an iPhone app to help users locate their stores more easily. However it seems that the move hasn’t made everybody happy as some customers on the Murphy Facebook page have complained that people who don’t have smartphones are being discriminated against.

    The story will really be told once the deal expires. Are these customers going to be converted to long-term customers of the brand? That's the danger with the deal-oriented crowd. The very premise of businesses playing in the social arenas was to develop meaningful long-term relationships with consumers. Yet, we revert back to deals. Unless we can prove that those who cashed in on this deal with stay loyal to the brand for years to come, it will likely end up being a net loss and be met with an angry CFO.
