Tweet from Everest on Galaxy S2: Twitter at Top of the World

The social networking giant Twitter just keeps on growing and gaining more prominence and just in recent days we’ve told about Twitter’s growing integration with TV, about baby names being announced on Twitter and how the first visit to the U.S. by newlyweds William and Kate was announced on Twitter. However today’s news is rather special as Twitter is at the top of the world after a tweet was sent from the summit of Mount Everest.

The very significant tweet was sent by appropriately named British mountaineer, Kenton Cool, who tweeted via a 3G connection on his ninth trip to the summit. This was made possible after Ncell, a Nepali mobile network operator, installed a 3G station at the base camp of Everest last year, according to Stan Schroeder over on Mashable. We’ve been bringing you dozens of articles about the most-talked about phone of the moment, the Samsung Galaxy S II and Sony managed a very neat marketing coup by sponsoring Cool to use the new handset, not only to make a call from the summit, but also to tweet.

The tweet itself read, “Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset! @Samsunguk.” It’s a great moment for Cool of course but also a historic moment for Twitter. Kenton Cool said, “I’ve climbed Everest before but have never been able to share the exhilaration and excitement I experience when I reach the top with those back home.” Before the climb Cool also showed an unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy S2, and you can see that video below.

What are your thoughts on this milestone for Cool, Twitter and even Samsung? Have you ever sent a significant tweet at a great moment in your life? Let us know by sending us your comments.
