Barbie & Ken Loved Up Thanks To Social Media

For many of us including myself, I can remember playing with the Barbie doll back in the day and having the joy of dressing her up and watching her relationship blossom with Ken. Now that has been passed on to my own children. Today even though the pair officially parted ways on Valentine’s Day in 2004, it seems with the help of a big marketing campaign, they are as popular as ever!

Erica over at Mashable has reported on the 50th anniversary of the Ken doll and in time for its latest “Sweet Talkin” version, makers Mattel, had launched a big social media plan with the help of social networking sites Twitter, Facebook, viral video YouTube, location-based Foursquare and the aid of Hulu.

For Ken to win his favorite babe back, fans were able to log onto BarbieandKen.com in order to vote on whether the two should be reunited and Barbie should take him back. This as Erica reported, ended with an official Facebook page being set up just for the blonde goddess. Following on from this, sites such as the one mentioned above and Twitter, became inundated for Barbie with suggestions of how she should deal with the Ken “getting back together” situation.

We can tell you that the pair are officially back together with new Twitter and Facebook accounts. As well as the inclusion of social media, normal advertising methods were used, to attract fans by way of billboards being shown of Ken telling the world his love for Barbie, with a advertising spread in the US weekly publication.

To find out more on this head on over to Mashable. Tell us are you big fans of Barbie and Ken, I have to say I am and one of my favorite bits of Toy Story 3 is that of the loved up pair. Did you engage in the marketing campaign?
