Twitter Purchase Tweetdeck: $50 Million Price Tag

Twitter has quickly grown to be one of the largest social networks in the world reaching an all time high of 200 million recently. That being the case there are a number of third party developers out there that are trying to add to the Twitter experience in their own ways, one of them is Tweetdeck.

We are now reading reports from the likes of Reuters.com and the Los Angeles Times that Twitter are looking to purchase Tweetdeck, the price tag is $50 million which is an astronomical amount for a third-party bit of software. It wouldn’t be a bad buy for Twitter as so many people use it and they could utilize it for their own future plans.

The article that Reuters author Alexei Oreskovic has added talks about how Tweetdeck was also being looked at by UberMedia but the exclusivity of the offer that permitted them not to talk to other potential buyers has run out. This means Twitter are free to talk about buying it without legally treading on people’s toes.

Over at TechCrunch their author Michael Arrington has said that this is a defensive move from Twitter as they didn’t want to allow UberMedia to have too much in terms of market share. Interesting stuff in the world of tweeting which has seen many celebrities hitting the site in recent times but we are wondering just where they are going to go with Tweetdeck. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

What do you think of Twitter buying Tweetdeck? It’s a pretty good defensive strategy to buy out the competition isn’t it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
