Fake Twitter Accounts: Osama Bin Laden Alive & Tweeting

The big news at the moment is surrounding Osama Bin Laden and his death, we have added various reports around how it has affected social media and also how Twitter traffic has spiked. Not only has it spiked but we have reported on some of the crazy stats that have been recorded by the growing social networking site.

Since then there has been reports of malware sporting Bin Laden’s face pretending that you can see pictures of him and now there are fake Twitter accounts of Osama Bin Laden pretending to be him saying he is alive and tweeting! In a way it’s a little amusing but there’s always a flip side to the coin and it can be perceived as disrespectful.

We learned of the fake accounts through an article over on the Huffington Post by Tim Stenovec where he says that before President Obama made his speech about the death of Bin Laden there were some savvy social media users who maintained accounts. One of the tweets said “Obama thinks it’s a big deal that he has found me….I’ve been on twitter this whole time #comeatmebro”.

The very same account @OsamaBinladen has more than 14,000 followers. This isn’t the first time we have seen fake accounts created with people trying to be amusing, some may remember the Cobra that escaped at the NY Bronx Zoo.
