Droid Bionic (or Targa) Release Delay on Verizon: Speculation Why

Here at OSM we’ve been keeping you up-to-date with all the latest developments on the Motorola Droid Bionic (or possibly Targa) and know that many of you were disappointed at the recent news surrounding its release delay, because of enhancements to be made. Now we wanted to take a look at some of the speculation as to why the launch was put back.

There have been mixed signals over recent weeks, from speculation that the Droid Bionic was to be abandoned altogether in favor of the Motorola Targa, then to the webpage for the Bionic being removed from the Motorola website. Then 2 days ago we informed on some of the rumors surrounding just what enhancements were being made to the Bionic and told how when it finally emerges it may be quite different to the original handset that we saw. There is still some confusion over the Targa name, whether this is the new name for the Bionic after its ‘enhancements,’ or whether this is just the codename for the new Bionic but no doubt that question will be cleared up in due course.

Apart from the improvements reported to be coming to the Bionic, there has been a lot of speculation about other reasons why the Android smartphone for Verizon with 4G and a dual-core processor, has been deferred. Clint Boulton over on eWeek has put together a handy slide show on possible other reasons for the delay of the Droid Bionic. One reason considered is that the Motorola Droid Bionic was just too similar to the HTC Thunderbolt that was recently released, also on Verizon. Both phones had similar form factor and similarly impressive specs and so it’s possible that Motorola decided it needed to make the Bionic more different.

The Samsung Droid Charge was also due on April 28, (it was delayed but today we told of a likely new release date). This is another 4G phone for Verizon and the fact that the Droid Bionic was set to be beaten to the finishing line by the Droid Charge could be another reason again, that the Bionic was put back. To give the Droid Bionic a better edge it’s also speculated that Motorola will update it instead to run on Android 2.3, Gingerbread, the very latest Android OS. After the battery issues for the HTC Thunderbolt it’s also possible that Motorola is considering an improved battery for the Bionic or Targa.

Yet another possibility speculated is that Motorola has some knowledge on what might be included on the new iPhone 5. Just recently the new iCloud service has been speculated for the next-generation of Apple’s iPhone and maybe Motorola wants to give the Bionic more new features to compete against the iconic iPhone. However given the fact that Apple is notoriously secretive, we feel that Motorola would be reacting to speculation about the iPhone 5 rather than having insider knowledge.

To take a look at all the speculation regarding the Droid Bionic release delay check out the full article at the eWeek link above, which certainly gave us food for thought. Meanwhile Kellex over on Droid-Life took a look at the Motorola first quarter earnings call and questions asked of Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha. There are some details on the Motorola take of the Droid Bionic delay, one reason being a 4G issue, and an assertion that the Droid Bionic is still to be released in the summer, at the same time as the 4G LTE Motorola Xoom tablet.

Fingers crossed then that the Bionic, or Targa, or whatever it will eventually be called, will be released in early rather than late summer, but you can bet that we’ll be keeping you informed of further developments. What are your thoughts on the Droid Bionic delay and will you still wait? Let us know with your comments.
