Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Phone Debuts With Android 2.1?

For most this may seem like a bit of a lost cause but Sony Ericsson has just released its new Walkman logo’d W8 phone. This will be the company’s first Android supported “Walkman” labeled device.

Now although its sounds pretty reasonable from the offset, the new W8 features Android 2.1, yes that’s right 2.1 (Lightning), and as Gizmee states this will be the devices drawback as everyone else is running Android 2.2 Froyo.

Anyway lets take a quick look at the W8, first up we can see that it sports more than a passing resemblance to the Xperia Mini, whilst under the skin spec levels run inline with that of the Xperia X8.

Up front is a 3-inch touchscreen which manages 480×320 resolution while outback a highly standard 3.2-megapixel camera takes care of your image taking. Unfortunately the rest of the spec is as BGR claim “nothing to call home about”.

With 128MB of RAM and FM radio its a simple package for those that don’t require the frills of the current smartphone range. Of course there is the “Walkman” title which should mean that music accessibility will be high on its agenda.

You will be able to choose from three colors, blue, red and orange when it debuts in Asia, but the chances of it reaching U.S. shores seems a little unlikely. Tell us if you think that there is a place for older technology in a market that is moving forward so fast?

I’ve always been a fan of Sony’s phones, but their reluctance to put the latest Android version on many of their devices will always be their downfall and prevent them from being the best on the market.

A shame, as many of them are well built, attractive phones with a strong feature set.
