Apple iPhone 5 on Verizon Yardstick: iPhone 4 Not a True Launch

The Apple iPhone 5 is once again the subject of tech headlines all over, with speculation that it may not be coming in the summer as expected, and will instead be here later in the year, or even in 2012. Nevertheless iPhone 5 news and speculation is as hot as ever and now it seems all eyes will be on the Apple iPhone 5 for Verizon, with some saying that the Verizon iPhone 4 was not a true product launch.

When the iPhone for Verizon was finally announced back in February everybody knew it would be a big success. Many consumers had wanted an iPhone on a carrier other than AT&T and the Big Red was the one many wanted to see get it. However the initial release didn’t quite see lines around the block as many expected and was a bit of a damp squib. We and many other tech sites, who at that time thought an iPhone 5 was coming in June, advised it might be worth waiting and it seems many people did.

Apple is to report it’s fiscal second quarter earnings next week when we will learn the true success of the iPhone 4 on Verizon and John Paczkowski over on All Things Digital reinforces the feelings that the iPhone for Verizon was not as successful as initially expected, pointing out that both Apple and Verizon failed to release any early big sales reports.

However the point is also made that the iPhone 4 on Verizon was not a true product launch in the way we would usually expect. The iPhone 4 had already been out for many months on AT&T and so those who really wanted it would have purchased the device already. Only those consumers determined to stick with Verizon as their carrier would have been in line for the iPhone when it finally came to the Big Red, and in fact many of those probably pre-ordered it instead. This points to the fact that it’s the Apple iPhone 5 that will be a true test of the iPhone on Verizon, with a whole new product on the table.

Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, said, “We note that the Verizon iPhone launch has widely been perceived as a disappointment. But in some ways, we see the iPhone 5 as the true Verizon iPhone launch; the first time Verizon customers will have access to a new version of the iPhone. We believe that many Verizon customers made the decision to wait and purchase the iPhone 5 when it launches instead of buying the mid-cycle iPhone 4.” This really sums up everything we’ve said. Meanwhile over on Beatweek there’s an interesting article about how many iPhone consumers have been left in limbo with the uncertainty surrounding a release date for the iPhone 5. AT&T customers may be wondering whether they should jump ship to Verizon and Verizon customers “are waiting for the half-breed Verizon iPhone 4 to be replaced by the first “true” Verizon iPhone.”

There are certainly interesting times ahead but it does seem that we won’t really know the success of the iPhone on Verizon until the Apple iPhone 5 hits the shelves. Did you put off your purchase of the iPhone 4 on Verizon in favor of the iPhone 5? What are your thoughts on this? Let us know with your comments.
