iPad 2 Sales Smash: Up to 2.6 Million and Counting

It’s no secret that the Apple iPad 2 has seen phenomenal success since it’s release last month and we have written many articles about the demand for the tablet and just recently how shipping times are going down, a sign that supplies are beginning to improve. We now hear confirmation that indeed the iPad 2 has been a sales smash with the amount sold already up to 2.6 million and counting.

Recently we told how after the initial huge demand many analysts were upping their sales forecasts and it now seems they had good reason to. Official Apple figures for sales are not yet available but a report on eWeek by Nicholas Kolakowski, suggests that between 2.4 and 2.6 million units have been sold so far. That means the iPad 2 is selling even more quickly than the original iPad last year.

A report in DigiTimes tells how the above amounts were delivered to Apple in March and of course though this wouldn’t usually tell us how many had actually been sold into customers hands, as the iPad has been sold out virtually since day one of release and is still in short supply, it would suggest that most of this amount has actually been sold. Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, previously predicted that the iPad 2 would sell more quickly than its predecessor and initial sales figures suggested that in its first weekend after launch in the US the iPad 2 sold 500,000 and 600,000.

As we already told readers, Consumer Reports recently placed the iPad 2 at the top of its ratings for the most-promising tablet, despite the fact that there is more competition this year from tablets such as the Motorola Xoom and the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. With such a ringing endorsement maybe we shouldn’t be so surprised at these stellar sales. ITProPortal also reports on these sales figures and makes a good point of reminding us that if in fact Apple had been able to satisfy demand then the sales would have been much higher still.

No doubt before long Apple will be giving us the official figures for sales of the iPad 2 but until that point this is a pretty good idea.
