DreamWorks CEO Joins Zynga’s Directors- A Path To Hollywood?

Social Games developer Zynga has added a big fish into its ever expanding pond, by adding DreamWorks CEO and co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg to its board of directors. The big movie boss will aid Zynga if they choose to venture out further into the film industry.

We have seen a similar situation with Rovio as they linked up with 20th Century Fox to use their massively popular Angry Birds game to fuel “Rio”, the feature film set to hit cinemas soon. Zynga create hugely popular games like FarmVille, CityVille and Mafia Wars to name a few, which are in most cases played on Facebook.

Zynga’s board of directors now has 6 members according to Mashable, who are their CEO Mark Pincus and COO Owen Van Natta, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, Kleiner Perkins partner Bing Gordon, investor Brad Feld and now the DreamWorks CEO and co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg. Katzenberg’s experience in the film industry may prove a valuable asset to Zynga, if Hollywood may be a part of their future plans.

The games developer have dipped their toe in the movie scene before, last year doing a tie in with DreamWorks to promote the animated blockbuster Megamind. It is likely that Katzenberg joining Zynga is no coincidence after they paid them a favour before. Zynga done a similar tie in with Sony Pictures movie “The Green Hornet” and their Mafia Wars game, which could also be another favour earned from a big film company. Would it make sense for Zynga to expand into the film business?
