Apple iPhone 5 Rumor: 8-Megapixel Camera Looking Likely

Regular readers here at OSM will know that we try to keep you all informed about the latest Apple developments and we’ve already posted news and snippets of speculation many times about the upcoming iPhone 5. Now we have heard a new Apple iPhone 5 rumor and it seems that the next iPhone could have an 8-megapixel camera, which would certainly please a lot of people.

Not long ago we published an article, which contained an infographic about speculated features on the iPhone 5, and one of those was an improved camera. This latest rumor would seem to back that up as it seems that Sony’s CEO, Howard Stringer, may have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag during an interview. Apparently Stringer, speaking to The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg, said that shipments of sensors to Apple would be delayed because the Japanese earthquake had affected a Sony camera sensor plant.

The odd part of this is that currently Sony does not supply these parts to Apple and Omnivision has been supplying the camera sensors for the 5-megapixel camera on the present iPhone 4. This news was brought to us from Apple Insider, sourced from MacNN, and of course what Stringer said has led to many believing that Sony is working on an 8-megapixel camera for the next iPhone. It also backs up a rumor from February when an analyst claimed that Omnivision would not be able to provide an 8-megapixel camera sensor in time for the iPhone 5 and that Sony would be providing them, at least at first.

You have probably also heard the speculation over the last few days that the iPhone 5 will be delayed and instead of being released around June as most of us expected, might not be out until later this year. This would also seem to fit this latest rumor as the delayed camera sensor parts from Sony, would of course affect the release of the iPhone 5. Meanwhile an article over on Apple Bitch also talks about this speculation and suggests that Apple could also be considering enhanced sensors for the next iPad too, which has been rumored to hit this fall, although others are saying it won’t be until next year.

From what we’ve heard so far we’d have to say it’s a pretty good bet that the iPhone 5 will have an 8-megapixel camera. With so many new impressive smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Droid Bionic, due to be released with 8-megapixel sensors Apple really needs to keep up or risk it’s next iPhone already seeming dated on release. What are your thoughts on this? If you are interested in the iPhone 5 would you buy one if it didn’t have an 8-megapixel camera? Let us know by sending us your comments.

I think this would be a bad move for Apple and I hate them! I have Evo 4G with 8MP camera. I think it’s overkill for a phone. Not to mention, you have to have a pretty steady hand to take great photos. My Fuze was 3.3MP and took great photos. You have need 8MP resolution buy a real camera.
