Samsung Galaxy S II (S2) Vs HTC Droid Incredible 2: Best Choice?

There are some amazing upcoming Android smartphones on the way and two that are really impressing us on what we’ve seen so far are the HTC Droid Incredible 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S II (S2). We’ve previously compared the Samsung Galaxy S II with the Motorola Droid Bionic, another notable upcoming handset, but today we thought we’d look at the Samsung Galaxy S II vs. the HTC Droid Incredible 2 in an attempt to help you make the best choice for your needs.

We’ll give you some things to think about, considering what we know so far, to try to help you choose which one, if either, is right for you. Please bear in mind that although the Galaxy S II specs are now official, we only have some leaked specs of the Incredible 2 to go on, and the rumored release dates may be subject to change.

Firstly we need to look at the operating systems and the Samsung Galaxy S II will definitely be shipped with Android 2.3, Gingerbread. The Droid Incredible 2 (known as the Droid Incredible S in Europe) is thought to also be running on Android 2.3 with HTC Sense on release so not much between them there. As far as the display goes the Galaxy S II has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus whereas the Incredible 2 has a 4-inch Super LCD WVGA screen.

Moving on to camera capability, the Galaxy S II has an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera with video recording and capture of 1080p. The Incredible 2 by comparison also has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing so the Galaxy S II just has the edge here. On to the all-important processor and the Galaxy S II has the NVIDIA Tegra 2, 1GHz dual-core processor and the Incredible 2, a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor. Battery sizes see the Galaxy S II just edge it with a 1650mAh battery whilst the Incredible 2 has a 1450mAh battery.

As far as memory is concerned the Galaxy S II has the edge again with 16/32 GB storage and 1GB of RAM whilst the Incredible 2 has 4GB storage and 768MB of RAM so a clear winner there. The Samsung Galaxy S II also features Samsung’s Android skin, TouchWiz 4.0 which is pretty nifty and will make some controls available with hand gestures, which we previously wrote about here.

Moving on to carriers, the Samsung Galaxy S II should be coming in variants to different carriers and only yesterday we heard that the official specs hint that AT&T will be getting the handset first and that it was expected shortly. However we also heard yesterday of a leaked Verizon roadmap which showed expectation that the Galaxy S II would be released on the Verizon 4G LTE network in May, but with no exact date. The Droid Incredible 2 is a 4G handset for the Verizon 4G LTE network and the rumored date for that is April 28.
UPDATE – The Incredible 2 is not a 4G capable phone but is for the Verizon network.

There’s a lot to impress with both of these upcoming handsets and some similarities, although we’d say the Galaxy S II excels, but of course, the design preference is very much down to personal taste and will affect your choice. The price is no doubt another factor to take into consideration although there is no pricing available yet but we hope we’ve given enough details to enable you to begin to make an informed choice. As said previously, you can check out the full specs for the Samsung Galaxy S II at the Samsung product page here along with pictures of this beautifully sleek handset.

What are your thoughts on these 2 promising handsets and would you be tempted to buy either? If so we’d be interested to know which you’ll opt for and why? Please do let us know with your comments.

According to every other site writing about it, the Incredible 2 won't be a 4G LTE phone – it's 3G only. That's the biggest difference. On the plus side, the Incredible 2 is supposed to have worldphone capabilities, so you'll be able to utilize a SIM card when you travel.

You are right Steve. This was a momentary lapse of concentration on my part for which I apologize and will correct. Many thanks for reading.

Could you please tell me whether Samsung Galaxy 2 is coming wiht 4G or 3G. Also let knw whether Samsung Galaxy S2 8MP reat camera is High Deffinition(HD) or normal one? Please reply back to this question bcos i seriously thought of taking it once its launched

    • Andrew

This will be a 3G phone. The video capture will be high definition. Currently, Qualcomm cannot fit a 3G and a 4G radio into a form factor this thin. Currently impossible as they are separate chips and not integrated yet (try next year). Source: I know someone who works in the chipset division of QCOM. Wait until next year if you want a thin 4G phone like the one from the company named after a fruit.

Living in Singapore the Incredible S is already released. It's a nice phone, smooth interface and great battery life. However, in terms of generation, the Incredible S is a top tier current generation phone while the Samsung S2 is another generation ahead. I've see and played with both….Samsung had a launch event for the Galaxy S2 here about 3 weeks ago and the public could get hands on.

Touchwiz may not be everyones 'cup of tea' but the ability to move and resize widgets gives it far more flexibility and makes it appear more computer than phone at times in a good way.

I don't suppose anyone knows the frame rate of the video recording on either of these phones yet, do they?

That's the true measure of a good quality video: frame-rate. Otherwise, you can have beautiful, but choppy pictures strung together just well enough to make you dizzy.

    • debbielt

HI Kay, sorry for the delay in answering. The video recording and playback for the Samsung Galaxy S II is listed at 1080p at 30fps. You can see more on the Samsung product page for the S II which is linked to in the article. Hope that helps and thanks for reading.
