Escapologist Houdini’s 137th Birthday With Google Doodle

Many a time here at OSM, we have brought you news of various Google Doodle’s that can be seen when clicking onto the world wide web. Search engine Google from time to time change their front page with a picture that signifies a special event, anniversary or even a birthday of someone. Just recently we gave you information on not just one but two doodles to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, before that the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day and individuals such as Martin Luther King, Paul Cezanne’s birthday and so on.

Today its the turn of famous magician and escapologist “Harry Houdini” or “The Handcuff King” as he was nicknamed, and his 137th birthday. On appearance the Doodle represents the famous Houdini in an old style picture with chains around his arms.

From time to time, no doubt many of you have referred to the man himself when perhaps trying to get out of a sticky situation, but do many of you actually know what the man was about.

Houdini who was born on March 24th, 1874, became a famous household name when his stage acts included him trying to free himself from handcuffs, ropes, chains, straitjackets which many magicians use today in their own acts. As metro.co.uk reported, one of Houdini’s most memorable acts was in NYC at the Hippodrome when he made an elephant with his trainer, disappear into thin air. Not only was the elephant and trainer nowhere to be found on stage but a swimming pool was erected underneath and again, there was no sign of them.

The stunt performer, magician and also actor in later years, died on October 31, 1926 at the young age of 52. As metro pointed out, the Doodle today, has spookly fallen in line with Houdini’s last surviving stage assistant “Dorothy Young” who died this week at the staggering age of 103.
