HTC ThunderBolt Release Date Official: Verizon Confirms March 17

We’ve been following developments of the HTC ThunderBolt 4G phone coming to the Verizon LTE network for some time. As many of you will know if you’ve been waiting for this impressive-looking phone there has been rather a saga with the release date. However we now have official news from a Verizon Wireless press release and it is confirmed that the ThunderBolt is definitely coming on March 17, so only 2 more days of waiting!

The release saga went on so long that we published a release rumor roundup and even since then there was further speculation and unconfirmed reports of various release dates. In the past few days though we told of the likelihood of a March 17 release date and then also gave details for pre-ordering. Now though the news is finally official. Quite why it took Verizon so long to come clean with a release date is anyone’s guess and we had many comments on our previous ThunderBolt release stories to say that people were so fed up waiting that it was putting them off buying the phone at all.

We reckon though that there will still be an extremely high demand for what, after all, is a significant handset with great specs such as a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 4.3-inch touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera and 720p HD video capture, all running on Android 2.2 with HTC Sense. Not forgetting that 4G capability of course which is likely to be a big selling point. You can see more on specs at the HTC product page for the ThunderBolt here.

The release confirmation comes from Tim Stevens over on Engadget who also confirms the $249.99 price that we gave you previously and additionally shows an update to say that Wirefly will be selling the ThunderBolt for $199.99. You can also view the official Verizon and HTC press release at the Engadget link above. There had been a lot of speculation circulating as to just why people were still waiting to hear an official release date, from technical problems to not wanting it to clash with the release of the Apple iPad 2. One thing for sure though is that Verizon and HTC had better make sure that it does now appear in 2 days and that it is glitch-free.

Have you been patiently awaiting the HTC ThunderBolt on Verizon? Are you going to take the plunge and make a purchase or has your attention been turned towards another phone such as the upcoming Motorola Droid Bionic, also a 4G handset coming to Verizon? Let us know with your comments.
