Facebook Vs. Groupon: Deals May Expand

When it comes to Facebook there aren’t really any markets that they aren’t looking to consume. We have already seen them taking on competitors with Warner Bros and perhaps Sony in movie rentals using their Facebook credits.

Facebook look to be attempting to cover all bases by offering everything from their site, it’s almost becoming a social media hub. We previously reported on the Facebook Deals page going live as well as when it went live in the UK but to take on Groupon is a bit of a different story. Facebook will have to carefully if they want to do well in this market and in doing so they are perhaps going to be expanding their deals page.

There’s a report over on allfacebook.com by Jackie Cohen and she is saying that Facebook employees will work with businesses to promote the deals and try to encourage people with accounts to share details of their discounts with their friends. Well that will certainly raise awareness on Facebook as there are a lot of people that are looking to save a dollar or two. If things go to plan this should spread like wildfire throughout the site and more deals should be being used.

Cohen is reporting from a Bloomberg report by Brian Womack and points out that in his article he is quoting from a prepared Facebook statement that says Local Businesses will be able to sign up to use the feature soon. This will mean that people will be able to find their deals in the coming weeks.

The way things are currently with Facebook’s deals is that they are pretty much aimed at mobile users at the moment, as soon as things expand from there (which we are sure they will). This will perhaps spell a bit of trouble for Groupon as Facebook who can bring it like no other in the social media world will be serious competition.

What do you think of Facebook’s deals page? Will Groupon be in jeopardy when Facebook expands its page? Let us know in the comments section below.
