Apple iPad 2011: Sells Out, Online Delivery Delays Slow Up

Apple’s iPad 2 officially launched last Friday and even before you had the chance to pick one up be it online or in-store, analysts were predicting how well the tablet would fair. We ourselves had asked the question whether there would be enough units to go around, and news from analyst firm Gleacher & Co stated that a staggering 600,000 next gen tablets would be sold just throughout the weekend.

Reports came in of Apple fans queuing up outside stores with one woman selling her place in the queue for $900 after waiting for a good 14 hours to get our hands on one. Initially on finding out details of the launch times, delivery for the device was to be as early as the following week. Shortly after we then heard from Debbie that online orders of the tablet, were realistically going to be 2-3 weeks.

Today the tables have turned yet again, according to Slashgear, customers will now have to wait a little longer in fact 3-4 weeks, as stocks of the iPad 2 have fallen short.

Retailers as stated by Piper Jaffray analysts had already sold out of the tablet by the end of trading on Saturday, and unfortunately Sunday proved to be testing times with no deliveries. It seems that only a small percentage (one third) of the iPad 2 units were sent to retailers. As telegraph.co.uk reported, some 400,000 to 500,000 units were sold in total, making it “one of Apple’s most successful product launches to date,” according to Chris Witmore at Deutsche Bank.

We have to point out that as much as this is disappointing for new and existing Apple customers, the results from Jaffray researchers was purely based on 236 consumers with no further information as to what models proved to be the most popular and sold out first. As Slashgear stated, Trip Chowdhry from Global Equities Research has said that during their investigation, the iPad 2 WiFi + 3G through AT&T proved to be more popular, with retailer Best Buy stating that stocks of their iPad 2 with some accessories had sold out within 10 minutes of the official launch.
