Xperia Play Release Date Confirmed: March 31 for UK plus price

We’ve been following the development of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone since the first sniff of it, when it was known as the PlayStation Phone. This Android handset has attracted a huge amount of attention as it is the first PlayStation certified smartphone and today we have news of the official release date in the U.K. of March 31.

We’ve published many articles now on this much-coveted device including recent appearances of odd handsets heading to eBay, the use of the Havok engine and its inclusion in our pick of the best upcoming Android smartphones for 2011 but until now there was not a confirmed release date available. The news of the release in the UK comes from Christopher Dring over on MCV, who also tells us there will be 6 games pre-installed.

There won’t be a lack of places to get hold of the Xperia Play either as it’s said that it will be sold by “all mobile retail and operators,” and there are hints that it could also be sold in games stores as well as talk of the largest Sony Ericsson marketing campaign in the UK ever. Ubergizmo also gives the UK price as £500 unlocked, that’s around $800 but as is often the way it will probably be cheaper when released in the US.

The Xperia Play will be running Android 2.3, have a 4-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and has a slide-out keyboard for gaming and if you want to find out more about it head to the Sony Ericsson product page for it here. Will you be standing in line on March 31 for your Xperia Play? Let us know if you are avidly anticipating this handset by sending us your comments.

I'm seriously torn between this and the Arc.

The Play looks great for gaming and emulators, and I've heard it has a front-facing camera.
But the Arc is gorgeous, and has that great Cybershot and Bravia technology inside

Still can't make up my mind
