Facebook Stats: Half U.S. 12-Year Olds Are Facebooking

Facebook is the largest social network on the Internet at this current time. It boasts a user base of more than 500 million with more than half of those being daily returners. Amongst those are possibly people’s pets like Mark Zuckerberg’s puppy ‘Beast’ who recently gained his own page.

Now we are reading reports further to the 50% of Britain that are on Facebook more than half the 12-year-olds in the U.S. are Facebook users which is quite astounding. We are aware that there is a rule on Facebook that to own a profile you have to be over 13 but as Jorge Cino says in the report over on allfacebook.com if they are younger than that then they simply amend their date of birth to accede the acceptable age.

Do children need to be on Facebook at all? Obviously Facebook don’t think and that is why they have the age limitation. Check out this research that was carried out back in 2009, surely the numbers have increased from then as the entire world moves towards social networking and social media.

What isn’t taken into account in the study is what percentage of these users are using them on mobile devices. As we know mobile phones are being used more and more by younger people. Just about every kid I know has one. In many ways you can see why they do as it makes it easier for parents to keep in contact with them but social networking capabilities are present on most smartphones these days. We wonder if smartphone manufacturers should be more sensitive to the age of their users.
